So, thinking of the SLX 7’3” MH swimbait rod for smaller swim baits under 3.5oz. My question is would this rod also work for larger top water baits like whopper plopper 130 and Spro Rat size 40/50 etc.?

It'll be good for those too.  Might find the 73 Tatula swimbait rod for a similar price.  I love my 79

Looks like it's rated 1-4oz and should do great with the topwaters. The 3.5oz will be at the top end for that rod and the 7'8" may be the better choice to cover those ranges presuming the length isn't an issue. If you prefer the 7'3" you'll just need to adjust your casting motion a bit to compensate for the heavier baits. I have the 7'8" for my kayak swimbait rod and have been very happy with it.

Reviving this thread. I can’t hardly fathom nd any reviews on this rod from anyone other than Shimano (or their endorsed anglers), just wondering if anyone has one and can give an objective opinion on it?

Some feedback on a swimbait forum states that it is good for 1.5 to 3 oz baits and is a good close quarters or kayak glide bait rod.  I have a similar cheapie rod I use for this along with ploppers, rats and on occasion chatterbaits.  It's the Lews Laser SG1 7'4"H but it has a normal bass rod (short) handle and is super tip heavy.  I use a 9+ oz reel to balance it out.  I got mine on sale for $48 but at $59.99 get the SLX.

Where do you see the SLX for $59.99?

I think he meant the Laser rod.  59 is like cost on the slx.

 

You coming up to the fishing swap in Essex on April 6th?  I'll be there with my rods that you can handle and I think I have a buddy bringing okuma and dobyns swimbait rods to sell.

I fish two SLX heavy swimbait rods and I'd go with the heavy. IMHO they fish a bit softer.
