Transferring unused fluorocarbon from one reel to another

Featured Replies

I got a little too eager in spooling up a reel with 12lb fluoro this offseason.  I now want to put the same reel on a different rod, but with different line.  I know its fine to transfer braid from one reel to the next but I've read that its a big no-no to transfer fluorocarbon line from one reel to another.  I guess the difference in my case is that I haven't even casted this line out yet.  Think I'm safe to transfer this unused 12lb fluoro to another reel?  It's Sunline FC Sniper if that makes a difference.

Don’t know what you read but I’ve transferred flouro to different reels a few times and never had problem (Sniper and Shooter)

I once transferred unused 20# Shooter as you did.

One thing I do is use KVD Line and Lure at different intervals while reeling which helps it to lay down nicely

Tip

When I spool flouro of any thickness I reel it on through a piece of soaked nylon

It may be due to coil set - the line closest to the inside of the spool will likely have tighter coils that the outermost line.

Some of that memory could be eliminated by stretching the line once spooled, depending on how long the line has been on the reel.

If we are talking about running FC line off one CASTING reel

and onto another, you'll be fine.

I do it often, especially if it's never been fished.

Spinning reels might be a different story, #slinky

but as long as the line comes off one reel and onto the other reel under a little tension,

you should be good.

Besides, doesn't seem much different than simply running it straight off a bulk spool.

Good Luck

Don’t stretch fluoro as it’s not as elastic as mono, hence the misinterpretation that it doesn’t stretch. Treat with KVD line n lure conditioner regardless of coils but it will help that. No problem transferring the line

Thanks everyone

This is why I keep old empty line spools. I just put a bolt through the hole in the line spool and attach it to a drill with pressure when I lock it down. Turn the spool tension up, click the button and then run the drill to strip the line. I'll guide the line and even it out on the line spool. Put a piece of painters tape with the make/# line and use it whenever/however you want. No issues over the last few years.
