Question for RoadWarrior

Featured Replies

Hey RW im going to Cabellas saturday and had a feq questions about this hybrid line.

Im thinking on putting the line on my spinning reel, which is currently holding *lb Trilene XL Mono.

Is there certain conditions when you use this line? or is it multipurpose?

Also RW most of South Jersey Lakes are shallow and water clarity varies from ultra clear- to almot putrid in different lakes.

Being said this, what line would you prefer for cranking?  The lakes also have a lot of pickerel which will shred your line if they rip into it the wrong way. I was thinking on maybe putting either 6lb or 8lb braid diameter on my cranking rod because the line is tougher and stronger for the picks, gives the crank more action, and i can make further casts. But also in the very clear waters im worried about it spooking fish, even though most crank strikes are reaction strikes anyway.

For my one bc which is a Shimano Citica 201d..i mthinking oif using the hybrid line, this rod will mostly be for pitching in heavy cover with jigs etc

Thanks alot RW please answer theese questions if you can. I truly trust all of your advice, since you are a wise person on the forums. -WM  ;)

I'm not RW--that's pretty obvious--but I've been dealing with pike and pickerel for 37 years and 6-8# braid won't cut the mustard. A 20" pike cuts through 14# Fireline like a hot knife through butter. Use a metal leader if you truly want biteoff protection. I use small diameter leaders 5-6" long and 12# or 18# test. Do the leaders alter action? I don't know, but I've caught loads of bass and toothy critters with leaders and I have full confidence while using them.

Go with Marty's advice and use a leader.

For your baitcaster,  give the Yo-Zuri #12 a try, I think you will like it just fine. I fish the Ultra Soft, but if that is not available, the Original Hybrid will be allright on a baitcasting equipment.

My standard recommendations are #6 Ultra Soft on spinning tackle, #12 on baitcasting gear.

The toothy critters will cut 50 lb braid off as easy as can be, when jig fishing.  ;) I wish there were a solution to the problem, I lose jigs topwater, traps, spinnerbaits every year to the critters, but I can't get myself to tie a steel leader on and fish with it.Ivan

Thanls guys! Ill try the leaders but i doubt ill like them.....RW how about tieing a blood knot of say 8ld test on the spool and than at the end near the lure like 14 lb mono or somthing? theres nop northerns in the lakes ill be fishing, and chances are the picks wont cut through 14lb too easy.what you think?

Fishing for bass in water that has "toothy critters" is simply another risk you take. Personally, I would make no adjustments. I would fish #12 Ultra Soft. If you prefer 14 lb test and another brand, use that. Tying steel leaders on bass lures is detrimental to being successful at bass fishing. I would NOT exercise that option.

Pickerel are just as adept at cutting line as their larger cousins.

RW and I have apparently had different experiences with leaders. I've caught too many bass with them to consider them as a negative.

And I don't want to sound like a high-falutin' moralist, because I'm not, but over and above losing lures, I don't like the idea of a fish swimming around with a mouthful of crankbait.

Touche!

Marty makes the point from an experienced angler's point of view, having "real world " experience under these conditions.  I definitely understand what you are saying and I am wrong. I should not have posted a response about this situation. This is not something I generally deal with.

I do not fish water where this is a big problem on a regular basis. However, I encounter toothy gar occasionally, but it is not a real consideration to me. The largest freshwater fish I have ever caught (by accident) was a gigantic gar. In that particular situation, I guess the teeth did not come into play.

Yes, I use the Ultra Soft on spinning tackle and baitcasting equipment.
