Good Find - Majorcraft Benkei BFS casting Rod.

Featured Replies

Check it out, got a Majorcraft Benkei BFS 6'5" UL, 1/32oz to 1/4oz lure wt, 3-10lb line.

Local tackle store takes trade ins and this was there, it's used. Found out from owner it was traded in yesterday. Only thing it does not have is the case, he had a Megabass Levante case that was also traded in. He asked if I wanted that, I declined.

Rod retails for $138, it was marked at $89.99. He sold to me for $80.

I totally checked out this used rod and there is nothing wrong with it, almost pristine. Blank is straight and guides are perfect straight with all inserts on guides. No nicks or anything weird.

Always wanted the Benkei BFS rod. Nearly got one last year but held off. I don't normally buy used rods, but I had the chance to really check it out, like I would do when I buy a rod from a store.

Owners of the Benkei, have you heard of a problem with reel seat stripping and becomes unusable?

I have my 22 Shimano Aldeberan BFS mounted on the Benkei(The Calcutta Conquest BFS  in the pic was for inital reel mounting on Benkei rod). Going to test the rod after work. I think it should cast 1/16oz on up lures.

I have the 6'5 as well, great rod and I find that it loves lures in the 1/16oz-1/4oz range. I never got it to throw a 1/32oz trout magnet with any real useable distance, but 1/20oz is doable.

As for the reel seat, the only problem I had was the locking nut is two pieces: 1) the actual plastic locking nut, and 2) the metal cover on the locking nut. I had the metal cover come off the locking nut, but I just did some light sanding on the locking nut, put some super glue on and put the metal cover back on it and have had no problems since.

Thanks Junger that's what it was the locking nut. I'll be sure not to over tighten when I have a reel on the Benkei

Most BFS bass rods are that way I have found be it Majorcraft, Daiwa or Shimano.  They are finesse versions of bass rods and aren't suitable to the really UL stuff like trout magnets.  They all have dedicated trout rod lines for that kind of stuff.  For Majorcraft it's their Finetail rods.

1 to 7 g is a typical range for a short stream baitfinesse rod.

Fish these in hill country limestone creeks for endemic bass - "Texas brook trout," which occupy the same niche in warmwater that trout do in cold.

Can also get by with really light rods for shore fishing, which I just returned from 2 nights of my favorite shore finesse fishing under dock nite-lites along a navigation channel in the Texas tropics.

Note, this longer progressive rod has a much wider lure range, which denotes fish-turning power in the rod butt - though the long tip on this (spendy) rod is too goosey to risk taking out on a kayak, where a redfish may run wide under your boat.

In river kayak, I'll give up the extreme light end to stop a bass at the boat, and S-glass shines here.

I have this very similar 5'4" 1-power IM6, intended for bass, that doesn't have a lure-weight rating, and while it will cast 2 g, the rod comes alive at 3.  While the S-glass rod above is rated 5 g at the low end, it fishes 3 g - even skip casts - like a champ.

Here's my all-around reservoir baitfinesse rod, which fishes the full-rated range, 1/16 to 5/8 oz, and fishes it all well.

The stream rods with the round reel pairing is really cool.  It's something i always wanted but don't stream fish or have trout.  Might make one for pan fish one day.
