Different brand/style of line on different rod/reel setups?

Featured Replies

Here's a random question that just popped into my head...

Do you stick with Stren? Do you switch to Spiderwire? Berkley Trilene? etc... etc... on various rods 'n reels and various weight pounds?

Monofilament? Fluorocarbon? Braided?

I run everything from 4# Stren (clear blue) on my UL Eagle Claw crappie pole.... All the way to 12# Berkley Vanish on my father's legendary Med/Heavy Tri-Sport T32 rod/reel from 1968, for heavy duty Stripers in Lake Anna, VA.

My favorite is my Daiwa 212 light action rod w/ Daiwa 7250RLA spinning reel, is spooled with 6# (max) Sufix fluorocarbon in a low-viz green.

Anyone else run various name brands in assorted weight pounds?

When I was little my dad was a Stren guy so all we used was Stren in various LBs.  I never tried anything else because that's what my dad wanted to stick with. Then when I got older and started looking online and seeing all the different brands I started trying new stuff. I use mostly Sunline as my main line. Then try out other lines just to see if I might like it. There's so many lines sometimes I try something new just to realize I had tried it a few years before.

4lb Trout Magnet or 4lb Viscous panfish mono (yellow or green) for all my trout/panfish setups.

These both hold up very well when i catch bass while panfishing too.

10, 12, 15lb Yo Zuri Hybrid for 70% of my casting reels the other 30% get 40-65lb braid (either Power Pro or Suffix 832). Although my big swimbait reel (Abu 5500 c3) gets 30lb Berkley Big Game.

My spinning reels have various different brands and types, Power Pro 10lb for the ones with braid.

6 or 8lb Berkley Vanish fluorocarbon (i dont think the more expensive ones are worth it) this works great for my leader material for ned rigs.

A few others have 8lb Suffix Superior mono. And ive got a couple that also have 10, 12, and 15lb Berkley Big Game.

And theres some with 4 or 6lb Yo Zuri Hybrid on them as well.

When i was younger and started out almost every time i went fishing i was using Berkley Trilene XL, i had no idea what fluorocarbon or braid were back then.

Mono I used to use Trilene XL and Big Game but switched completely over to Big Game

Fluoro is Seaguar Invisx if it’s the whole spool, Basix for leaders

used to use Spiderwire braid but have been only using Power Pro for a couple years

recently have tried a Stren copolymer line that has treated me well

im all over the place lol

I regularly use line from these brands (in particular order):

  • Sunline (braid and fluoro)
  • Seaguar (braid and fluoro)
  • Trilene (monofilament)
  • Daiwa (braid and fluoro)
  • Ande (monofilament)
  • Stren (monofilament)

There are not too many things (if any really) related to fishing that I am brand loyal to. It makes life a lot easier if I don't have to avoid something I would otherwise use simply because it's from a different brand.

I went through a 'braid phase' where I had it on practically everything. Now, braid is my preferred line for light spinning and maybe one or two baitcasters, and I use mostly fluorocarbon leaders with any braid. I use straight monofilament on most of my baitcasters these days because it makes my life a lot simpler, and also because Berkley Big Game and Ande are super economical (my eye doesn't twitch every time I want to respool). Braid on spinning reels lasts at least two seasons if I use leaders (I always do).

I do have 10 lbs braid (from a few different brands) on pretty much ALL of my L, ML, and M spinning rods with 6-8 lbs Daiwa Samurai fluoro leader.

I have three BFS baitcasters, and two of them are spooled with 6 lbs Ande monofilament. The other has recently been spooled with 15 lbs braid (it will have a leader) which I will try with the other BFS using small crankbaits. . . We shall see how that works.

Thank you, guys... I guess we're all pretty much in agreement with choosing this line with this reel, that matches the weight of the rod and/or overall setup.  100 gazillion manufacturers of fishing line in all assorted types, styles, weight/poundage, etc...   I keep a spool of Hi Viz yellow on my dad's old Garcia Conolon Kingfisher w/ my old mid 60's Garcia Mitchell 304 reel, as you never know if you run into a situation where the lake or river or pond is all muddy or dingy from the previous day's heavy rain.
