Reel maintnence

Featured Replies

Anyways, i have a pflueger trion baitcaster and its really bugging me with its downhill trend. When i bought it, the reel was insanley smooth and super fluid and quite. But in the last 6 months or so it keeps getting more and more um....... crappy. I dont know what is wrong with it, it now makes a clicking noise, makes a whining noise on the cast and the reel itself just feels...... i dont know how to explain it. Kind of junky, but not really. I put some oil in some bearings on the spool, (which helped a little) but dont know how to get the reel apart, and i dont want to break the thing. I have had it for about a year now and I want my old reel back!!! What should i try?

put a little oil in the tension control nob(the thing by the drag), put some oil in the level wind, or any where were metal touches metal. or save your self the trouble and send it to reelmech

I don't believe he works on Pflueger's because neither parts nor schematics are available to him. Check with him before you go sending it in.

ReelMech only works on Shimano, Daiwa, Garcia and Quantum, I have the list right in front of me because I'm sending my reels to him this week.

Happy Holidays!

rocknfish9001,

Sounds like the reel needs a complete break down and servicing.

I would contact :

If you have never taken a reel apart completely for service........don't rush into it, it's not for the faint of heart. If I were you I would try this first.

#1 as said above, put a drop or two of oil on the level wind worm gear, I actually use a light coat of a special lubriplate waterproof grease that I have acess to because I buy it for some of my farm equipment that runs under water/manure.

#2 take the side plate off where the 6 pin brake is, make sure there is no gunk in there, and put 1 DROP of oil on the bearing, remove the spool and put one drop of oil on that bearing as well.

If that make no difference I would send it in. I service my own reels, and I never do it in a big hurry or without the reels parts break down sheet. It requires close attention and a steady hand. DON"T over lube it either, this will cause it to collect more dirt, and run sluggish due to to much oil/grease in the gears/bearings.

If you have had the reel in use for about a year I too also suspect it is long overdue for a good clean/service job. I usually start fishing in late march, by mid june It's time for a relube, then again in sept. if I am going to do much fall fishing. Over winter I clean and completly lube them all again.

I echo Reelmechanic-Contact Pflueger! They will most likely honor the warrantee.
