All the Shimsno Curado I have and have seen are XG models with a 8.2:1 ratio.  Is it possible to change the gear ratio on. Shimsno Curado BFS reel? Is there any thing internally about the BFS reel that would prevent changing gears? Could I order a different set of gears and change them?

 

It would be nice to have a slower reel gear ratio at times for BFS.

You can’t slap just any gear set into a reel. The gears would need to come from a reel with the same frame (center to center distance, height and pinion length). What’s the IPT of the reel as it sits?  Ratio doesn’t offer any real mechanical advantage unless you’re pulling deep cranks etc. otherwise it’s just preference which is fine. 

The stock Curado has a IPT of 32.  I think a lower IPT would be better for me.  I am guessing that the Curado family of reels gears can interchange, but the is only a guess.

200i/70i/70k should all fit with the micro mod 70k being the ones to get.  You may have to get a drag stack too if the clicker and drag stack from the BFS doesn't fit into 70k gears.  You also have Scorpion BFS and Scorpion 70 to choose from.  I would only do this to upgrade to brass if the stock BFS aluminum gears got nasty feeling.  If you just want to buy a slower IPT reel then buy a slower IPT reel.  If you can't find a slower IPT Curado BFS then keep an eye out for the exact same thing, the Scorpion BFS, in a slower IPT.

Putting less line on the spool will slow down the ipt retrieve. Ipt of 32" is based on a full spool.

That’s technically correct but bfs spools are so shallow you couldn’t get any real difference. 

The Curado BFS only comes with an 8.2:1 gear ratio, but you can choose a right or left hand model.

Maybe a gear set from the SLX BFS. They offer a 6 to 1 ratio. I have one. It has the clicker. The SLX BFS uses the same frame as the curado
