Fellas,

I am going to dedicate one TD-Z strictly for jigs-its on my list to get good at in 2007.  contemplating Power Pro 50 lb.  and as opposed to backing it with mono, can you simply not spool it all the way?  how will this effect the performance of the reel? Something tells me this is a no-no since you fellas suggest backing with Mono.

First of all, the backing is to keep braid from slipping.

Filling the spool properly allows for maximum casting distance. If that is not an issue, it's not important.

I think another reason is economy. Bass fishing usually doesn't require more than 50 or so yards to fish with. By doing this, you'll get two fillings from one of those 125-yard spools. I use backing and use 50-60 yards of line regardless of whether I'm using mono or superlines.

I use backing on almost all my reels.  I buy a spool or two of el-cheapo shakespeare line at Walmart for about a buck or two and half fill the spool and then use the premium line for the rest.  I get quite a few reel fills out of one spool of premo line and I can change out line midseason without it costing me a ton.

I acually don't fill my reels to the limit. I find I myself and my reel preform better if not filled all the way. It all boils down to personal prefrence.

Also instead mono backing for braid I have always used a single wrap of electrical tape.
