NEW BAITCASTER

Featured Replies

Ive heard good things about the Daiwa Procaster 6+1.  I have the Daiwa Procaster Tournament, that is a little cheaper and it has performed very well for its price point.  The could 6+1 could only be better.

Try a Shimano Callisto. I have one on my c-rig rod, which I also use for light pitching. It is kinda rough, but the one I have has worked well for about a year and a half. It's only 40 bucks at Dick's. I saw one today at Walmart called a Inertia (I think pinnacle makes it) that looked sweet for 55 or so. That one has 9 BB's, and only weighs 7-8 oz. It was sharp, but I can't tell you if it's any good or not.

check out the Quantum Accurist AC500CX.  Cabela's has them on sale for $65.  I have 2 and am going to buy a 3rd soon.  Very smooth real, and have not had any problems at all.

I wouldn't, NE Bass Man. PT Quantums are great. The others tend to break quickly. Speaking from experience.

If you get a Quantum reel, get a PT series. The others have gears in them that aren't built to last.

All of my casting reels are from this price range. I have the Daiwa Procaster 100HL 6+1 ($69), 2 Daiwa Capricorns, a 100HCL 8+1, and 100XCL 8+1 (made by Daiwa for Dick's Sporting goods, basicly "super tuned" procasters) they were $79, 2 Bass Pro Shops Extremes ($79), a Daiwa Procaster Tournament ($49), and a Quantum Accurist AC501X ($79). The Procaster, 1 of the Capricorns, and 1 of the Extremes, have seen heavy use over the last 3 seasons, and during the winter I have cleaned them up, re-lubed them and they work like new. The other Extreme has been around for 1 season, same deal clean re-lube, no probelms. The Daiwa's use the proven mag-force cast control system, have a rock solid feel to them, and have great drags. The older Extreme's can cast a mile, and are as smooth as silk. I expect the new Capricorn to give good service too (just got it for Xmas). Just picked up the cheap Daiwa to go on a 6' Cranking rod, can't comment on how it fishes yet, wanted another Extreme, but wife looked at me funny......especialy since it was minutes after buying a new bass tracker. Best part was BPS had them on clearance for $29, so if it's junk I am not out much. My neighbor has had one for 2-3 years and likes it alot, so we shall see. I just got the Quantum the other day, have heard mixed reveiws on them, but I wanted a reel with a flipping switch, external adj. cast control, metal frame and one with left hand retreive, this has all of that , for a modest price. I was holding out for the new Daiwa Procaster RoJo, which has all that too, but the Quantum felt very nice on the rod I picked for it (St. Croix Premier 7' H power, fast action) so I took the gamble. I am pretty easy on equipment, and maintain it well, and we have a 4-5 month off season up here where water gets hard so the reels don't see the year round abuse like they would down south. I now have what I feel is "enough" casting rigs to cover me for all my bass fishing needs, and I didn't brake the bank doing so. I wish Shimano would offer something a little better in the $70-$90 range, I would probably try one of those too. The reels Shimano offers below the Citica do not impress me much, nor do the Pflueger casting reels below the Trion, of course, there is always the popular and reliable Abu-Garcia round casting reels, but I like low profiles.

If you are looking for a reel in the $50-80 range, you need to get an Abu Garcia. A C3 5.3:1 25" per turn $74.95. C4 6.3:1 30" per turn $79.95 at BPS.

If you buy one of these reels they will give you many years of problem-free service. I speak from experience, I have six of them and one of them is 24 years old and it goes out with me every day and works like new.

The Daiwa Procaster is a good one to start with at 60 bucks.  If you can stretch that money up closer to 100 I would get a Pflueger Trion.  It would be a smoother reel than the procaster.
