Bulk line-spools. Keeping track

Featured Replies

I buy 600 yard bulk spools.  Usually on sale during the off season.  It never fails, at the end of a spool - it’s like playing chicken.  “Do I have enough to fill my reel?”

I don’t know for sure how much line I’m filling.  It would be fun if I used exactly 100 yards each time, but that can’t be true.

you just go with it?  Sharpie mark?

Get a line counter.

Tom

I have so many wasted nearly empty spools from this. I just dedicate them for leaders.

The line counters that were available at the store all had bad reviews, so i just set the spool up at 20 yards inside the house, put a piece of tape on the line at the 20 yards for a reference mark and walk towards it while reeling. Ill reset the tape for a reference mark every time for 5 times total. Its very accurate no matter how fast or slow i reel, costs nothing, and i get to say i did cardio for the day.

Not the best method, and i would still like to find a better one, but it does work.

I’ve simplified this.  I use 12# fluorocarbon and buy it in 1000 yd spools and 15# braid which lasts for years.

Line counter then sharpie the amount removed each time on the label.

I'd get a line counter (I have one). Reel manufacturers line capacities are all over the place and mostly unreliable without being able to verify it.

With the mention of line counters?

Are there any that would be recommended?

i have and use the rapala digital line counter. I won't tell you that it is the most accurate, but in general it gets me within +/- 5 yards, which for my fishing is good enough.
