Abu Garcia 4601 Question...

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I had a brain fart the other day, I was going to run it by you guys on the boards to see if it made sense to you as well. I am the happy owner of 4 Abu Garcia 4601 C4 Reels, I however came to the unhappy truth that Abu Garcia no longer makes the 4601 size in the 6:3:1 C4 series. But they do make a 4601 size in the 5:3:1 C3 series.

So if these reels are the same size is it possible to take the gearing from a 4600 C4 reel and throw it into a 4601 C3 reel, to make that reel a 6:3:1 gearing reel? I was just thinking hypothetically if one of my reels wasnt able to be repaired could I purchase a 4601 C3 rel and got to a reel repair shop and have him switch out the gearing. Does that make sense?

I've done it in the past.  Hopefully current models haven't changed gearing.

I've had the old 4600 Power 4's changed to 5.3:1

I don't know about the new ones...  you can call or email Southwestern Parts and Service on Mockingbird Ln. in Dallas and ask since they are an Abu service center for the southwestern USA.  (that is where I had my gear swaps done in the past.)

If Reelmech reads this he will probably be able to say for sure just out of memory.

You can do it i do it to mine,as long as it is a lefty u cant take righty gears and use um in a lefty or vice versa!111  all the c series fit each other

Looking at the schematics for the 2 reels all of the needed parts are carrying different part numbers. I'm not sure when you change the main and pinion gears, that you don't have to change the worm gear to get the proper line carriage sweep.

Whenever I have a question about Garcia® parts or upgrades, I call Johnnie at Southwestern Parts, he has been my Garcia® mentor since 1990.

I agree with flechero on this, and contact Southwestern Parts
