purposes of the two different styles jig hooks

Featured Replies

I have two exact same football jigs, but notice they have different styles of hooks. Anyone know what’s intended usage of the two jig hooks?

EWG and Round bend jig hooks.

EWG Extra Wide Gap accommodates larger diameter soft plastic trailers, round bend is stronger, both appear to be forged wire bend hooks of equal wire diameter.

Not a fan of EWG hooks.

Is one better than the other in terms of keeping the fish hooked? Less breakoff?

Round bend excels in hook penetration because it doesn’t flex at the bend during setting the hook.

I like the EWG.  Hook point is closer to weedguard so weedguard doesn't have to bend as much.  I feel you get a better hookset.  I have never straightenend the hook on a fish so EWG's are strong enough. I use large plastics so there is more point exposed with EWG's.

The most obvious reason is the difference in the hook's gap. Bigger hook gap is better for beefier plastics, but that can be offset on a round bend in the way you thread your plastic on the hook. Weed guards can be bent down, or thinned out.  I'm with Tom on this. Round bend

The one on the left seems more like the o'shaughnessy style hook instead of EWG, and the one on the right is more like the common round bend style.

In general, round bend hooks have a better chance to hook a fish than o'shaughnessy hooks, but once the fish is already hooked, traditional o'shaughnessy hooks have a better chance to keep it hooked.

The EWG works, but on a small football jig like the Dobyns Extreme, I don't see a big trailer being all that useful.  The standard jig on the left uses the Gami 604, one of the best heavy wire round bends out there.

I much prefer the round bend.  It doesn't have the gap of the EWG, but the angle of the point allows for easy hookups.  The EWGs point angle isnt as exposed, which can be good in cover, but isnt as good for fish that just slap at the bait.  If the fish swallows it then the EWG style is good and once there hooked, they don't come off.

The trailer plastic has to slide through them differently or it looks kinda funny but beyond that they both seem to catch me fish that bite jigs if they're sharp and I do my job right 🙂

It's a more interesting discussion/question as it pertains to Texas rigs IMHO but still - when rigged properly and I'm doing my job - hooks hook fish usually - regardless of the way they look.
