Jack Up a Boat/Trailer (How to / Safety / Equipment)

Featured Replies

I'm new, and figuring this out. Tips (how to and safety) for jacking up a boat trailer?

I need to do it for a few reasons:

  • I need to replace the trailer jack wheel (on the front of the trailer)
  • I read I should spin the jack tires when I put the oil in them, so it spreads out. I have been skipping that, but to do so, I should jack them up.
  • At some point, I will probably get a flat tire, so I should learn now.

How do I do it? (I have a general idea from doing it to my car, but I wanted to get your experience)

Any safety tips (other than common sense) I should know?

What equipment do I need? jack stands? What type of a jack do I need (scissor vs hydraulic)?

You may get some different response here on what's 'Correct' and what's 'Not".

First, trailer jack wheel replacement can be effected

while the rig is connected to the hitch on your tow vehicle.

When I need to do Trailer wheel or tire mainainance,

I use a 3 ton hydraulic floor jack, and Jack Stands

My only real safe choice is to lift at the axle, as close to the inside wheels as I can.

Jack stands are positioned there.

Which reminds me, I'm due for a bearing re-pack & new tires next summer.

Good Luck

Keep the trailer attached to the truck with the ebrake on; less likely to slip off the jack.  I have a small hydraulic  garage jack that I can move under the spring hangers or axle.  Less than $50 at Amazon.  2x8x18 board for soft ground or more height.  If you're changing bearings jack stands are necessary. I wrote this earlier but forgot to send it.
