What did I do wrong?

I could offer up a couple guesses also but the horse is out of the barn at this point.

I will say if you can get them to bite a jerkbait this time of year I'm envious.

  • Im guessing your line had a nick in it. May be worth it to check your rod guides with a q-tip. If it catches the cotton anywhere, then it’s probably catching your line and damaging it. But line can ge

  • I would check the guides for any cracks or nicks, I had one on the tip that I had to use a magnifying glass to see. Also check the edge on the spool for any nicks. BTW, the significant other does

  • Losing a vision is pretty rough.  I've only lost one and it felt like a stroke was coming on.   My condolences. 😢

I was going to make a joke about being a Hawkeye but the sting of losing your lure is enough stress. Hopefully it was just a kink in the line and not a cracked guide. I dropped one of my rods and didn't notice that I damaged one of my guides. I was getting extremely frustrated when my line kept breaking until I found the cracked guide.

Well well well, looks like a Cyclone has entered the chat.  :)

I still need to check my guides. Haven't fished in several days due to the heat.

LOL. Son went to ISU and I have family that went to UI. So, what did you find on your guides. And yes, the heat has been crazy lately. Going to try some early morning fishing this upcoming weekend.

Well I gave them a quick visual inspection and they looked fine.

I NEED to do the qtip test one of these days.

I don't really have a crankbait rod so I threw this particular rod on Friday with a medium sized crank. Didn't have any problems.

I bleed black and gold.

Go Hawks!!!   :)

Just like the hok football team, it sounds like your line is only good for the first few weeks and choke down the stretch.  The only difference I guess is that your team will squeak by with a late win against nebby to get you to the capital one bowl to get kicked around by a mid-tier SEC school whereas your line will probably continue to break/choke.

I have had spools of line go bad before that were new from the store.  I just had to trash a bunch of line from a yozuri hybrid spool that I had where multiple rods were having similar break offs.  I respooled with the same line, but different spool and haven't had issues.  You have no idea how long that new spool of line sat on the shelf or in a non-climate controlled storage/distribution area.

Like others have said, check the guides and even the levelwind of the reel.  Storing your hooks on the reel body like that and you will likely end up scratching things that shouldn't be scratched.  I never recommend storing baits on the reel like that as it will only cause bad things, never good.  Use your rod hook hangar or buy one like what fuji sells.
