Baitcasting problems - Part 2 - help!

Featured Replies

Guys, I've been practicing really hard for nearly a month. Read everything on here. Can cast, not a mile, but longer than I thought I would be able to. Now, I can't cast past 60-70 feet with any accuracy. Obviously, wind can factor in, but I've not been able to cast really far & I don't know how this impacts how I want to fish. I fish senkos, plastics & 3/8-1/2oz Spinners. I fish from bank/shore/docks/rock ledges as I know no one with a boat. I can get it out there a little bit with these lures, but not that far. Just more practice? I'm using 6'6" poles with 12lb test, if that's any help.

Thanks a bunch.

Thanks riskkid, it just doesn't seem well, BUT, I'm not sure how far I need to cast the lures I'm using in the environments I'm using them in. How far is far enough????

Far may be a couple of feet from you or a 100 feet away, that depends greatly on the slope degree, composition and contour of the terrain.

MitchIsFishin,

If you don't have any overhead obstructions (trees etc.) a longer rod might get you some more distance. But I have always been able to bank/dock/point fish, and, catch quality fish within 20 - 30 feet of were I was standing using a lot shorter rod (5'6").

Heres a couple of good article's you might want to look at, in the front of this site..

Bank Fishing..

You Can Bank On It...

Tight Lines!!!

I have fished for bass all my life with baitcasting reels almost exclusively. I have had a boat for most of my adult life, but I still believe I have caught more fish from the bank than in a boat. I believe that this is because you must get closer to the fish to catch them. Like ReelMech said, you don't have to cast a mile, you just have to cast in the right place. You are doing fine. JMHO

Once you get out 60-70 feet with a cast you're not going to be able to get real accurate.  Way too many variables come into play once all that line is hanging in the breeze and you've got a relatively light weight lure on the end of the line.  As long as you're in the ballpark you're doing fine.

Just wanted to Thank everyone for the help, suggestions & links. I guess, on the surface, it seemed like a dumb question, but I'll keep practicing and having fun with it. Thanks! :o

No question is dumb, brother...that's why we're all here.  To learn and get better.  :o
