Sufix 131 breakage issues

Featured Replies

I’ve had two casting setups spooled with 131 for about a month and a half. 30lb for moving baits and 40lb for jigs. I haven’t been having a great experience with it. Lots of breakage issues that I haven’t had to deal with when using 832 in the same sizes. I’m not breaking off at the FG knot or on fish (so far thankfully).
Randomly I’ll just cast and send my

bait, FC leader and 10-20ft of braid into the abyss. This has happened twice with the 30lb and twice with the 40 also. I’m not fishing rock, docks, wood cover where this would be more likely. Just grass 90% of the time. I can only think of one time that this has happens to me with 832. Any ideas what could be happening? Really frustrating and I’m very close to respooling both reels with 832 or some other brand of braid…

Perhaps monitor they way the braid lays on the spool between cast and especially after you've reeled a bait all the way in.

Seems something is damaging the line within the length of the cast. If the line is wound on loose on the spool or even has loops, they may be contacting the reel spool frame on the cast. This repeated high speed action often weakens the line which will eventually fail and somehow it's always at the most inoportune time.  This can be a big problem with FC.  Add in picking out a few wicked backlashes and air born lure loss becomes a regular occurrence until this is addressed and corrected.

Good Luck

Don't forget to check the rod guide inserts, especially the tip guide. A damaged insert can shred the line quickly.

checked the tip and first couple but I’ll double check the rest.

Ive FC and mono break from getting pinched between the frame and spool, but I have a hard time believing that could damage heavier PE to the point of failure.  131 is supposed to be a flagship product, so one would think QC is pretty tight, but who knows.

Check all the eyes and line guide with a cottonball or swab.  Even a small crack or chip in the guides material can be razor sharp.
