Fun With Frogs

Who doesn't love throwing a frog? For me, the problem is that I rarely throw it. I just about always choose something else like a buzzbait.

Some of you know I'm opening two new Marriott hotels at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and I have a temporary office in the Admin office of the fairgrounds. The property also has a few ponds on it. I bank fished a few of them earlier this year and caught a few spotted bass in the 2-3 pound range as well as a handful of dinks.

But last week I decided to bring one rod to work and tied on a hollow bodied frog. I didn't bring any other baits so I was forced to use just that one frog. I'm glad that I did.

I head out there in the blazing heat around lunchtime and toss that frog and I have not been disappointed. I fish it parallel to the shore and it's largemouth that come crashing up from deeper waters and smack the crud out of it. I'm catching 2-4 pounders every day, but they are skinny fish. There are tons of small minnows in these ponds, but if they had some bigger forage I'd bet these bass would be 7-8 pounds.

This weekend I brought my frog game to Lake Tobesofkee. I was out on my kayak fishing some narrow creeks and creek channels, tossing my frog deep into the weeds. I only caught two, but had a decent number of blowups.

I forgot how much fun it was fishing a frog. I caught another 2+ pounder at the fairgrounds today. But tomorrow I'm going to tie on a buzzbait and see if I can get them to hit in in some of the deeper water.

This from the woman that goes out and catches 30-60 bass almost every time she hits the water!

You slay them out there.

Yeah, I get to fish fertile water, but walking along a bank and summoning four-pounders from the deep isn't something I get to enjoy.

Oh I'm sure there's bigger fish in there - just gotta hit em at the right time and place - keep fishing it you'll figure em out and a frog is a really good bait for it.  Littler bait fish usually means bigger bass.  Bigger bait fish usually means ain't no big bass keeping baitfish small and edible.

You’re in prime frog and buzzbait territory now.Pat Cullen wore the big girls out down there with a buzzbait in his day. Enjoy

I night have a prop bait somewhere in my arsenal.

BTW, we need to get together and fish sometime. It's been a while.

Where I fish, the bass haven't consistently bit on a frog in years (sad face).  I used to be able to get on a good frog bite every season, but one year it just stopped and it hasn't returned.  I think the pressure of topwater lures in general got to them.

I felt the same. But one day I brought just one rod to work with a frog tied on to it and forced myself to throw it. There was no second guessing and changing out to another lure. I'm glad I did that because now I have confidence in throwing it again.

I also think that frogs don't get enough respect as a summertime bait.

One thing I picked up on at the crystal clear waters at the fairgrounds is that the bass are not cruising the shadows and feeding. They sit in deeper water and come flying straight in to the shallows for a hit and run feeding. They did that with my frog and I watched them do it feeding on minnows.

I was surprised at how fast they are moving from deeper water to just inches of water. It was an awesome sight.
