Heavy line-through swimbait rod advice?

Featured Replies

Caught a rod under a boat cleat this weekend and snapped it right in two. It was a gift and I don't think made anymore anyway, so I need some advice on another rod.

some details:

Actual bait weight 2-3oz

line-through

big Treble hook

usually 22lb flouro if it matters

most common bait depth is 6-10, sometimes a good bit deeper on specific targeted fish (not sure this matters?)

strikes on these baits are not in any way subtle

mostly long casts covering a weed edge or a feeding flat/dropoff intersection.

also gets used when throwing at scoped fish, but those are usually a good bit closer

So I'm looking for a rod that is very good at casting, especially the 3oz (I can fish the 2oz on other stuff). But at the same time, it's a big treble, not an owner beast, so I'd prefer it to load deep into the rod. I have one rated up to 6oz (Daiwa) and it'll cast the bait a long way, but it's awfully stiff for this single treble hook on a line through.

This isn't a casual bait for me anymore - it was probably 60% of what I fished last weekend.

Any advice?

i throw my 3, and 3.5oz l.t. gills on an irod 804sb, or if I'm "impulse fishing" the dobyns kaden 806sb travel rod that lives in my car. both of these rods handle the bait well, but i prefer the irod for "every day" fishing. it loads fairly deeply on a hook set, and will throw 2oz baits without an issue.

i also have a johnny morris carbonlite glidebait rod which is moderate and throws up to 4oz without any issues. it is a solid rod, nothing special but absolutely will "do the job"

I've been using the Megabass Valkyrie 7'4'' H+. It's rated up to 3oz. It can handle that and maybe a fuzz more. Great all around rod. I have used it the 8in Magdraft and 7in Bass Mafia Loaded version.

Not sure your price range but there's the Megabass Mark 56.

It's beautiful and handles great.

SPRO KGB swimbait rod is also a solid choice.  Also the Levante Leviathan for trebles being it is more parabolic.

The 710Hf St Croix models will toss upwards of 3.25 oz (rated .75 to 3oz)

If you want a bit more wiggle room the 79Hf Tatula Swimbait rod is great 2+oz rod

LDC and Leviathan are solid companies that have models that will fit your need
