Calcutta: 23 BFS vs 24 Shallow Edition

Featured Replies

The 23 BFS version has been on my WANT list for several months.

Today I stumbled upon the 24 Shallow Edition.

Are these pretty similar?

Main difference?

Thanks!

They share the same frame but have different spools, bearings, and braking systems.

I have two of the BFS version and one of the Shallow Edition.

I use the Shallow Edition for crankbaits and jerkbaits.  Amazing reel. Not really for BFS.

The two BFS versions..... One is for trout and pan fish. I have cast baits down to 1/32oz on this one.  The other is used for BFS crankbaits and small jerkbaits.

Thanks, I was hoping you would respond as I know some of you have these.  :)

I too have both.  They're both excellent reels and the SE really shines in the neighborhood of 5g+ and the BFS is good down to 1g or so.  Take into account the baits you'll be using.  I can fish a variety with a SE.  A 1/8 jig with a 3" Easy Shiner weighs 6g, right in the wheelhouse of the SE.  The 2.8" Fat Swing Impact on the same jig weighs 7g, again, SE territory.  The SE also has a centrifugal brake which won't actuate as readily as the FTB brake in the BFS model.  Let your intended lures help you with your choice.

Thanks guys.

Looks like the BFS version is still leading on the want list.

Mostly thinking smaller treble hook baits for bluegills, crappies, and bass.

Cranks, jerkbaits, topwater.

It's the only reel that I've had the "I NEED this reel" feeling. I have some nice reels but honestly I wouldn't miss any of them. This thing is just "different" for some reason.   :)
