Fluorocarbon Abrasion Resistance?

Featured Replies

Probably been asked 100 times but you always hear and read about flouro lines being "more abrasion resistant" and this interests me as I guess Ive not had problems with abrasion with either type. Must be the kinds of fishing I do, but I do use lighter, smaller diameter lines. Have you really noticed a big difference in abrasion resistance?

Fluorocarbon is formulated to balance abrasion resistance (springy and low memory) to toughness (softer and slightly greater memory).

I fish braid across the board, and fluoro shock leader.

Toothy salt fish, and maybe snook gill plates, I'll opt for the hardest leader.

UL/finesse, I'll pick the softer, tougher leader for max shock tolerance.

A couple of things about using fluoro for main line.

It has higher line memory than mono.  It also weighs 80% more, so your spool won't start as quickly and needs more brake - same diameter mono should cast farther.

It depends on what you’re comparing it against.  If you’re comparing against a hard, slick mono like maxima then the difference is going to be slight.  If you’re comparing against well used 832 braid then you’ll see a big difference.  Vs mono it will be more abrasion resistant generally considering you could be comparing against trilene XL, supernatural, or any manner of average to softer monos.  Also consider that there is softer fluorocarbon that will be less abrasion resistant than the best mono.  I’d say that seguar red label is softer/less abrasion resistant than big game.

In light line, I’m like bulldog and use harder fluoro leader material since I’m throwing braid to leader.  Sunline FC leader has been my choice in 6/8/10.  The 10 has been in some thick stuff for me this year and I have yet to have a fish break it off.

Nowadays I tend to believe lines abrasion resistance is mostly related to diameters, instead of the claimed pound test, who makes them, or how premium they are. For example, since the diameter of 12lb fluoro is often similar to 40~50lb braid, I'd say their abrasion resistances are about the same. Some JDM lines, fluoro or braids, claim to have really small diameters yet very strong tensile strength, but in my experience, their abrasion resistance is mostly related to their true diameters.

JDM is going to report true diameter - they're the only producer with a line specification committee, JAFTMA.

If you compare Seaguar Gold and Blue leader, Gold is smaller diameter for test, harder and more abrasion-resistant.  Blue is softer, tougher, and knot-strength beyond words.
