Pitching and flipping rods

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I don't own one but am looking into a pitching/flipping rod.   I am going to put a Revo SX on it and was wondering what yall think about the BPS XPS flipping rods or the Team Allstar. I know that the BPS XPS is on sale with the reel, but is it yworth the extra money for the other?  Any input will be appreciated.

If you want a true flippin stick (7'6" H action), I'd look hard at the following:

Powell or Kistler for a sweet light weight one (flippin with a heavy rod all day can get old).

Also, Castaway's Bud Pruitt models are awesome and a great value for the $.

The Team Allstar is nice, I own one. But I'd rather have one of the above.

I have the Quantum Tour Edition PT Gary Klein signature series flippin stick and love it. The guides wrap around the rod for a parabolic action and it has a split rear grip, 8 foot long. It's a nicely balanced rod and I highly recommend it for the money.

The kistler is only about 50 bucks more than the Team Allstar, is it that nice of a rod?  I have honestly never spent more than 80 bucks on a rod and am a little worried about getting my money's worth.  If anyone has any input, it sure would be appreciated.  Thanks again

I own a Kistler Magnesium TS flippin stick. Love it. It's balanced , light and can feel the fish blink....  It is a great buy.

Gander Mountain make a nice flippin stick. 7'6" and its $60

Most stores don't carry them, just ask my store got some in fast.

Is it the "All Day Flippin' Pitchn' Stick 7' 8" Heavy Telescopic Fishing Rod" from their website? http://www.kistlerrods.com/p/KR/c-mt-specialty-fishing-rods/MgADFPSH78T.html

I looked at it and it looks real nice.  I borrowed one of my Dad's 6'10" for my first flippin' and stuck a 5+ largemouth.  I am hooked now.  I just want to get a good rod.

Also what about Gloomis flipping sticks?

Thanks

I have some Team Allstars, I like them. But I am going to buy a few Dawia Light and tough rods in the next few months. I have looked at them and they are awesome and a pretty good price for what you get.. Split grip too. And only cost between $110 and $130.

I own a Flippin stick, but I very seldom use it. I pitch 99% of the time, and I use a 7' MH rod that I also use for Carolina Riggin and TX Riggin.

If you fish real heavy shallow cover (matted grass, lily pads, bushes) in stained to muddy water, a true flippin stick is what you need. But, if you're fishing clearer water, sparse cover, then you can get by with pitching most of the time.

If you are going to actually flip (10 ft of line in tight), then the Kistler is worth the extra $, b/c of the weight issue. if you do not want to spend that much, I agree with the e-mil above. The Diawa Light and Tough is a good stick for the $.

The XPS rods are really exceptional for the money.  If the money is tight, don't hesitate to go with the combo.

I have many flipping sticks, but the Castaway Bud Pruitt sticks are my favorite.Look at the HG40 series Heavy action. Its light weight, excellent sensitivity and the Heavy action in the HG series is like a normal MH action of the regular series rod. :) Ivan

Thanks guys,

I went and looked at the Powell's today (like the feel), I just didn't like that it was not telescopic (can't fit in the rod locker).  I am going to look at the Kistler's tomorrow (i hope) and The Bud Pruitt's series if I can find them.  I wish that I had a BPS near, they keep talkin about building one near Birmingham, just not done it yet, I want to see those XPS rods.  Please keep the info coming, got a bday coming up and need to let my wife know what I want (I jsut got to figure out a way of doing it without her seeing the price??)

it is a great stick and you couldn't go wrong with it.  I also think the longer the better.  i like the 7'11" Heliums.  they are real strong and light.  unlike most flippin' sticks kistler's heliums are not bulky and cumbersum at all.  their 7'6" and 7'11" rods only have a 10" handle and are a pleasure to use all day.  they cast, flip, pitch, and skip equally well, and i think the extra length helps you put the bait right where you want it.
