rod length

Featured Replies

I'm somewhere between 5'6" and 5'8", and I use mostly 7 foot rods.  I started out using 6'6" rods because I thought they would be easier for me to handle, but honestly I have no problem with 7 footers.  The increase in casting distance is well worth it.  The only time a 6'6" is really an advantage is if you are fishing from the bank and you have a lot of trees overhead.

It depends what your doing. If your slinging a crank bait as far as you can, the 7ft (softer) rod is fine. If your skipping a bait under docks in close quarters, a 5 - 5 1/2 works well. And etc. for everything in between. Personally, I'm thinking your all around (spinning) rod to be about 6ft. Your (bait casting) cranking rod 7. EWG

What are you comfortable using?  If you can use a 7 footer easily, then by all means use up to that length.  If not, experiment with 6'6 and 6' rods and see what works for you.

Use what ever rod feels good to you, If a 7 footer feels ok then use it. If nothing over 6 feel ok then stay to 6 feet and under. It all is what feels good to you, and if you can use it. There is no size rod for short people or tall people. I'm 5'10" and I like using 7" to 8' rods.  Its just what I like. I used to have a lot of rods in the 6 to 6'6" range, then started using 7 footers. I now only have two rod out of about 15 that are under 7 foot. Most guys use a 7' Or 7'6" flippin stick. I prefer to use a 7'10" or 8 footer, just what I like.

I'm 6' tall and have rods in all lengths. I really like 6' rods and think they are the best length for worming, and oftentimes spinnerbaiting. I think a 6' rod help you manipulate your worm with more finesse and increases accuracy when casting. It is however, nice to have 7' rods for c-rigging and pitching, or when hooking up with a big bass. My frog rod is a 7' MH St. Croix and it is a joy to use when hooking up with the big mamas. All the lengths are great, it's just a matter of matching it to the technique at hand. 8-)

I agree with Hot n Tot.  I use all rod lengths based on the circumstances.

I'm 6'3" and my favorite length is 6'6" but Ive got a 6 footer for jerkbaits and Im getting a 7 foot rod for swimbaits and jigs.  It is all preference and what feels comfortable.

If I was 5ft. tall, I would use an "ice fishing" rod

Now that's funny right there.
