Fishing (electrical) with braid

Featured Replies

I needed to run Ethernet across the ceiling of my warehouse. Everyone I talked to was quoting higher than I wanted to pay because it was only one run total and 20’ in the air.

Now, the roof is supported by standard steel joists and they lined up such that I had a series of triangles about 50’ long to pass through. (Some of you already know where this is going). Well, I put the safety bucket on the fork lift, got my trusty wrist rocket, a 1/4-20 nut and a partial spool of 65lb Contra braid.

I climbed in the bucket and had one of my crew lift me into the rafters. I tied the braid onto nut and made a loose pile of line on the floor and took my shot. The first shot hit the far wall and bounced back almost the whole way. Two more tries and I had my whole ceiling run done and dusted. I tied my cat6 to the fishing line (uni wrapped in e-tape) and pulled it across.

I need to terminate the ends and clean up my drops, but that's it. If I look at the money saved as money earned, I made good money. Plus, I used up a partial spool and got to use a slingshot indoors and on the clock!

(OSHA if your listening, I used PPE, had a spotter, and fired myself before I was lifted off the ground.)

Minus the sling shot, this is the method my IT department uses in our buildings. Tie something heavy to fishing line and wing it in the direction you need it. Do that enough times though and you'll end up like me...receiving a 5% charge for cable management fees on my HVAC renovation project. Looks like a kid threw up unchewed blue spaghetti.

Were you wearing earplugs? If so, OSHA doesn’t care 😳😂😂

Jetline mouse! We could shoot these across a warehouse or basketball stadium. Makes wiring fun- and easier.
