Spooled up my new-2-me SLX MGL 71HG

with 8# AN40. Mounted it on a Lew's 7'6" MF Custom Pro Speed Stick. Tied on a 5/16 oz. (.356 oz. actual weight) Scatter Rap to dial in the reel. Rod's low limit is 1/4 oz.

You Northern guys are most likely waiting for ice out. I was waiting for my nephew to head for LA so I could get my car back. No way am I putting a rod in the back of my B-I-L's truck. Unfortunately, today my car broke down so I have no idea when I'll get to try the combo. 😭

Oh well, it'll give me a chance to prepare a few more combos for testing. 😁

@new2BC4bass I think you’re really going to enjoy that setup and I for one am looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it. Being a Northern guy myself (Illinois) I’m definitely looking forward to ice out and just as importantly 2 upcoming fishing shows to help get me through this cold weather. Also I absolutely love my SLX71HGA mounted to my 7’-0” med power rod.

I've had the RH version for a few years. It performs better than almost all of the reels I have that cost quite a bit more.

Where did you get AN40?

Purchased large (3000 yds. I think) filler spools of 8# and 12# several years ago. I like it a lot.

Growing up, 16lb AN40 was about the only thing that we spooled on any baitcaster. But it’s been discontinued for at least 6 or 8 years now, maybe longer.
