New UV Curing box

Featured Replies

IMG_1377.jpegTook a page from both Marling baits and engineered angler lures and cobbled together this new uv curing chamber with lure turner. The motor was like $16 for 2 and the light was like $45. It’s a 356nm wavelength light which is supposed to be better for “thicker” coats. The 395-405nm is better for thin coats. The 365 is also about twice the price. The 395-405 will cure fine, but it just takes longer. I’m 3d printing an enclosure to hold the “electronics” now (really just the wiring of the switches to the motor, lamp and power supply.

Hey Smirak,

It's been a while since you posted your UV curing box - do you have any follow-up comments about how it works? I was wondering if the enclosed container allowed the heat to build-up and affect the curing process?

I was thinking about a similar (smaller) DIY project using mirrors instead of aluminum foil to scatter the light. What are your thoughts?

I use a 365nm wavelength light, so it cures fairly quickly. I usually leave it in for an hour and take it out. The heat on that light fixture I have dissipates out the “back” which is on the top side (outside) of the box. Therefore, it doesn’t get hot in the box hardly at all. My first intent was to use mirrors as well, but I didn’t have any and had some tin foil sitting around. Not the best, but I haven’t had any issues yet.

Thanks for the update, Kevin. I've ordered a 365nm light and started working on a rotary support for the baits. My workspace is limited, so the enclosure will be smaller than yours. If I can't cut the mirror pieces without breaking them, I'll use the foil like you did.

I hope the Saley Creatures appreciate all the work we do to catch 'em!

Mirror cuts just like glass. Should have no issue if you use a glass cutter. Let us know how it turns out. Mine is way overkill size wise and I think I’m going to rebuild it anyway…
