GutterToad DeathWish

Featured Replies

Anyone have any experience with it?

Almost bought one this morning but I backed out. LOL

Looks pretty dang cool though.

Yes, I threw them last fall and sold them all this winter, if that tells you anything. It is a killer concept, but I feel the execution was lacking. The hookup ratio on the prescribed hooks was terrible. They swim well and don't really float like WCZ states. They're a different variation of the Zoom Unitoad, but the Zoom has a better hookup ratio.

Thanks for the reply.

my experience was similar to Drew03cmc's experience. I like the concept, but found the execution to be a little lacking. no slight on wcz, just not my style of "topwater" fishing.

I just happily bought some to play with :) I watched the main vid and it seems like there are definitely nuances with rigging it, but with feedback on SU and from others, I think it will be fun to fish at some of my gnarly spots.

Aside, I just recently sold my Unitoads and other Zooms (apart from my Mag UV Speedworms) - I like their stuff, but reached my limit on warped baits (not the Unitoad in their shell, of course). Even with the Mags, the first thing I had to do is open them and unkink half of the tails. Drives me crazy.

Let us know how you do with it.

Obviously I will get a PB and runner-up state record! :)

I didn't grab any but they kind of remind me of the 3:16 Rising Son Weedless 6.75". I've fished them similarly just chucking them into submerged slop and fishing them over it.

Not a bad analogy. I couldn't even hook up on the 4" with aggressive river smallies. It wasn't the hook. I was using the recommended BKK. It's just a bait that you aren't catching most of the fish that bite. It's one that you need to be patient and hope they actually swallow it or you're SOL. I fish topwater for the bite and the fight, not the swings and misses.

WCZ had a drop of the GutterToad Deathwish today (Tuesday) so I grabbed 1 pack in Brown and 1 pack in Green...based on some of the comments in this thread I also went ahead and ordered 2 packs of the Zoom UniToads from another company...so I will look to do a comparison this summer...they seem like unique enough baits that they might attract attention from the bass...our underwater grass/vegetation gets pretty thick in the summer time so my hope is that I can glide these over that submerged vegetation and experience some explosive bites (and hopefully not just swings and misses)
