Expride HF 1/2- 1/1/2oz or MH 3/8-1oz

Featured Replies

I need help picking a good all arounder.

I mainly fish big worms 10+ inches, yamatanukis, jigs, and frogs, occasionally I’ll throw a chatter or buzzbait. I know its a crazy lineup but if you had to pick one which would it be. My guess is id definitely be a smidgen over the 1oz rating occasionally.

You're asking a lot of one rod.

I do not have the B, but I have the 72HA. It is a jig and worm rod without a lot of versatility. Powerful and sensitive but not a lot of tip or bend. I launched bass out of the water on frog hooksets. Fun, but not productive. Would never imagine throwing a bladed jig on it.

Whatever cross carbon weave Shimloomis is doing seems to be adding a lot of strength, power, and sensitivity while sacrificing bend or taper. See: NRX+.

I do pretty much what you're describing on a couple of rods: ALX BMJ and the P5 Super Destroyer, with the caveat that I don't use a heavy weight with big worms.

Both rods struggle a little bit with driving frog hooks or getting them out of deep cover. Otherwise, handles the spread real well. The Super Destroyer is above the price range but the BMJ is right there, maybe just a bit more.

Hope this helps.

As a general rule, I tend to avoid a rod's outer limits. On the low end, it is not that big of a deal because the worst that can happen is the rod just doesn't cast well. On the high end, though, the worst that can happen is you're damaging your rod. These listed rod ranges are, at best, educated guesses.

So, just on the basis that you mention you may be casting at or above 1oz i would avoid any rod that I didn't personally have experience that it had ample head room to cover those needs.

I also agree, though, this is a lot to ask of one rod.

The Daiwa TTEL761MHXB is the Patrick Walters "Big Worm" rod. It's 7'6" and rated for 12-25 lbs line and 1/4 to1 oz lures. I'd call it more of a MH+/XF compared to my Daiwa MH/F "All Around". Might be worth a look.
