Freshwater Gear Salt Water Fishing

Featured Replies

Just learned of a new dock near me that is on a brackish river that contains salt water species. I used to do mostly salt water fishing but had separate gear for it and it has been so long I can't remember what I had. Anyone using their bass rigs for salt water? I think a MH Fast Action rod with a 3000 size reel ought to be just fine for sea trout, flounder and other smaller fish but wondered what other folks know about it.

Mostly though I am wondering about the lures. I can't imagine a sea trout wouldn't be tempted by a jig, or crankbait, or spinnerbait.

Try them & find out. I caught my PB sea trout just over 8lbs while fishing a ball jig with a plastic grub. Everyone else were fishing jigs tipped with live shrimp.

I fish for red fish. Trout and snook and use med heavy casting and spinning tackle all day long. 2500 or 3000 size spinning reels work perfectly

Round Ambassadeurs 4600 or pro max 1600 are my go to casting reels.

When I lived in CA over 25 years ago I used freshwater tackle for bonita, mackerel and bass every weekend for a lot of years, even halibut and barracuda. I have a Shimano 300 size Bantam I filled with 300 yards of 8 lb line that I used for albacore. I use freshwater tackle for all the inshore fish in the gulf

Here in Florida for those of us who live on or near the coast our freshwater tackle is exposed to salt in the air that can be carried inland for miles.

So one does not have to actually use it in saltwater to be affected by saltwater.

That said, I treat all of my reels with corrosion X especially all the bearings. I never have any rust or corrosion issues and can use freshwater tackle in saltwater with no issues.

The key is also regular maintenance and inspecting often enough to prevent any problems.

And sometimes switching out bearings to full ceramic also helps. I sometimes even replace the pinion bearing in my baitcast reels just to prevent any rusting since it sits right next to the spool and my braid line brings in the water with each cast.
