Curado

Featured Replies

Im thinking of getting a new reel but confused, so many to choose from. My goal for this reel is for throwing 1/2 oz or lighter chatter baits on a 7 ft -7-4 glass rod

The reel is the curado 151 mgl

I see a 151 m also , so I did a search on google for the difference between the mgl and the m. AI came up with this, Im going to paste it. Thanks

Feel free to delete if I did something wrong by posting it Thanks

The primary difference is generational: the Shimano Curado 151 MGL is the older 2021 model, while the Shimano Curado 151 M is the upgraded newer generation. (Note: The "151" designation simply means both are the left-handed versions of the 150-size reel). [1, 2, 3]

Key Differences

  • Spool Technology: The older 151 MGL features the second-generation MGL spool. The newer 151 M upgrades to the MGL Spool III. This newer design is narrower and thinner, reducing start-up inertia by roughly 15% to deliver even better distance and precision with light lures. [1, 2, 3, 4]

  • Body Design & Ergonomics: The 151 M introduces a flatter, more compact, and more ergonomic frame compared to the older MGL model. It palms much more comfortably during long days on the water. [1, 2, 3]

  • Side Plate Material: The 151 M utilizes a CI4+ carbon side plate, making the reel feel slightly lighter and better balanced in the hand. [1, 2]

  • Refined Internals: The 151 M integrates SilentTune technology to reduce spool shaft vibration during casts, resulting in a quieter and smoother casting experience than the older 151 MGL. [1]

  • Aesthetics: The older MGL has a distinct jet-black top plate, green side plates, and a heavily ported black spool. The 151 M features a sleek, unified matte cosmetics update.

For the lighter lures check out the 71.

I picked up a Curado MGL 70 this season and it's turning into my new favorite reel. The only thing I miss compared to my Zillion is the drag clicker.

I have it set up on a Mojo Bass Glass 7' 2" MM rod and it's a nice match.

150M is the current model. It also has an MGL spool. MGL spools are good.

Ive heard the older model 150 MGLs are actually a little better, but IDK. Ive had the 70, the 150 and 200 in my hands and they all feel really nice. Im partial to the 70, and I use a Met 70 for chatterbaits in the spring. I like a bigger reel with a 100mm handle for burning a 1/2oz bladed jig in the summer.

Curado 71 ftw. I have about 8 or so at this point. Don't care for the 150 size.

I ended up getting the 201m

I was worried about the amount of line it held. But now Of course I wish I got the 151 or the 70.

Im trying to find a good composite rod for it thanks everyone

200m is a good reel. Half ounce chatter plus trailer is a heavy lure.

Spool some fat fluoro and have fun.

I will have to get some 12 lb fluorocarbon , any brands recommendations, Im a braid fanatic with a fluoro leader, I like the extra distance i think I get using it. I wonder if I miss out on any fish doing it that way fishing with a chatter bait since braid floats ?

@Standard how do you like the glass rod from st Croix? Is it a good rod for chatterbaits ?

I've been using the Curado for bladed jigs lately but stepped up to the 201m to try and balance out the rod I've got a bit. If it's a lighter rod I'm sure the 150 would be a fine choice but if it's a heavier rod it may be worth considering the 201m if you are concerned about balance at all.

Thanks Im not out long so the balance i really don’t notice

I wanted to get the black base series rods in a medium heavy moderate action so I went to bass pro website Cabela’s and seen a 7-4 medium heavy moderate. I got a good discount on it so I ordered it yesterday. Today I went to st Croix web site to farther check on specs and they don’t make a 7-4 mhm in carbon. They have a glass in 7-4 mhm but bass pros website does note list it as glass so I went to cancel and told them the issue and I was told that any order over 10 minutes can’t be canceled. Are justice system should be that fast. Anyway it looks like Im getting a glass rod

I wanted a rod for chatter baits any opinions would greatly be appreciated thanks

Glass rods are cool. There was a big movement towards glass rods for chatterbaits, some years ago.

It'll probably do well.

I hope so thanks

Love the rod, dislike the trigon grip. This particular rod was the first run of the trigon rods, and it was a warranty replacement that just sat in my garage for a few years as I had already bought a rod to replace it - one of the original grip glass rods because they were on closeout due to the new model coming out. I figured I'd buy the Curado and get some use out of the trigon one, only to discover that the reel seat doesn't cinch down tight enough to hold the reel without some play. Pretty disappointed in that. I even tried a 150 size reel I had sitting around, and it still wouldn't tighten up enough to take the play out. Hopefully they fixed the reel seat, I need to get in touch with St. Croix and see what they'll do to fix it.

This past weekend, I put the Curado on an Abu Vendetta MF 6'6" that I also hadn't used in a bit, and really like that combo. Lightweight rod that matched up really well with the Curado for flicking jerkbaits and the like.

I have a question is there a way to tell the difference between mono and Fluor ? I have some on a spool but forgot what I had on it

The Dobyns 736CB Glass is considered a great bladed jig rod. If I remember correctly, the rod was designed for chatterbaits. Don't own one so no idea how it would handle less than 1/2 oz. lures. Glass or carbon is a personal preference. I'm going to be trying both.

  • Author

Thanks I heard Dobyns are good rods also but I don’t think Cabela’s handles that one. Im trying to find out now if there is a way to differentiate mono from Fluor

I have some on a spool but I forgot what it is

It's not rocket science on knowing what's on your reel, put a piece of tape on the underside of the reel foot that has what you put on written on it, it can be changed easily at a moment's notice. Been using Curado reels since 1991, still have some 201s from that year in use, along with some Calcutta 251s, simple maintenance, a few of the simple, cheap, normal parts were replaced but they keep going on larger fish than bass. I have other later Curados also and other brands, but none have replaced the warm feeling I get with these reels, heavier? Yep. Clunkier? A bit but worlds they were better than what they replaced. One broke side plate but I superglued it back together and it runs fine still.

Hello thanks for asking. I haven’t got out yet to try it. But If it fishes as good as it feels and look watch out lol. I can’t believe how light it is. Like a feather
