AbuGarcia-This may be a stupid question but...

Featured Replies

I'll ask it anyway.  How in the dickens do I get my reel apart?  It's an Abu Garcia 2005 LP.  I got it last fall and used it very little.  It was casting extremely well, no backlashes or anything.  Then it started making a high pitched whinning noise while casting.  I thought, Ok, I'll take it apart and oil it.  Read the manual, started removing parts.  yes, all the screws are out.  Handle and assorted parts with it.  Now what? I can't get the body apart.  Do I need a bigger hammer????????? ;D

Have you taken the palm plate off?  You twist that upward and remove it. Remove the spool and you'll find the mystery screw that continues to hold the handle end plate on.  Sounds like you might have a spool bearing that's bad or needs lubing.

Cart7, Got ya covered on the side plate removal.

As for the screeching it could be spool support bearings that are dry, or even dimpled bearing shims (small copper plate behind the bearing) that need replaced and a drop of oil. When and if you get to the bearings to remove them, don't lose the bearing retainers (small wire clips) that hold the bearings in position.

Oiling the bearings should be done after cleaning the old oil from the bearings, I don't think you want to go that far, so you might try adding only one drop of oil then re-assemble the reel and try it.

If it doesn't help the issue you had, then the reel will need to be broken down completely, cleaned and re-lube.

Good luck
