another baitcaster question

Featured Replies

i was just wondering what your thoughts were about round body baitcasters vs low profile?  does one have an advantage over the other?  or is it just personel preference?  does one excel at a specific technique over the other?

Thanks

Low profile fits better in the hand, round baitcasters hold more line.

I use both, and do not have a preference based on application for either. For some, the round reels may be uncomfortable to "palm". You'll just have to try one to see. I have fairly large hands, so it's not a problem for me. I'm using Daiwa Millionaire's, and these are relatively small round reels. They are the first round reels I've bought since back in the old days, when you spelled baitcaster Ambassadeur.

There are some very good round reels still out there. Calcutta's, Abu's, Luna's, Millionaire's, etc. Go to your tackle shop, have them mount one on a rod, and give it a feel. You might like it. Some peolpe do, some don't.

Along with more line capacity, round reels are usually stronger mechanically. They will take a little more abuse. LOL

It really is a matter of personal preference.

One is easier to hold than the other depending on the size of your hands, also reel weight comes to mind.

The mechanics are IMPO the same, unless you get into the DC's.  All BC reels are winches, with basically the same mechanics inside. Some round bodies have better drag systems than LP's, but those are usually in round reels made for both blue water and fresh.

Just my .02¢

Tight lines all!!
