I am using a baitcaster for the first time this year. I have a Daiwa Procaster® 6+1 Series/Bionic Blade XPS Combos Baitcast Rod/Reel.  7' Medium Action rod, 8-17 lb Line test.  1/4 - 5/8 Oz lures.  Reel gear ratio 6.3:1.  Line retrieve 28 inches.  

My baitcaster seems to start casting terrible halfway through my fishing trip last week.  The weight lures I was using on it didn't change as I stuck to heavy lures to avoid birdsnests.  Am I using the wrong line?  I used 14 pound Berkley Trilene XL Monofilament Fishing Line?  Note the line was brand new.  Is this the wrong line type for a baitcaster?

When was the last time you oiled the spool bearings ?

Never as I just bought the reel...

some diawa reels have a drum that comes out to work with the magnets.if the drum is not oiled it sticks and the magnetic brakes stop working.

all brand new reels should have a drop of oil added as you have no clue how long they have been sitting.oil the spool bearings with a reel oil and make sure the drum if it has one comes out easy.

Dodge is right, new and fresh out of the assembly line are not the same, you don 't know when the reel was assembled and how long has been sitting there before you purchased it, reel oil due to it 's very low viscosity tends to dissapear with time and use. Every 2-3 trips add a drop of oil to the bearings that support the spool and once or twice a year have the reel disassembled, cleaned, re-oilied & re-greased; if you do so your reel will last a good couple of decades and always perform flawlessly.
