My mother in law bought me a nice Bill Dance spinning reel combo but unfortunately when it arrived it was not spooled with any line. Could someone give me the directions on how to spool it correctly or am I stuck taking it to someone to do it for me? I am not the dumbest but I am going to need you to explain it in terms that I will understand. lol I bought 8 lb test Spiderwire EZ super mono lo-vis green if this helps. The spinning rod and reel is as follows Bill Dance select 20 Quantum 5.5:1 gear ratio. Thanks.

Thread it down the guides, open the bail, tye around spool, place spool label up on floor,close bail. Hold line in a napkin firmly and start reeling. After about 10 turns stop drop the line down and look for pig tails. If not fill to recommendation. 1/8" from edge. If your line pig tails turn spool over.

I agree with the above except that the label position is meaningless, because they vary. The supply spool should be on the floor such that the line comes off counterclockwise. Your line goes on the reel clockwise and each time it does it puts a clockwise twist into the line. You want the line coming off the supply spool the opposite way to partially offset the clockwise twists. I say partially, because you can't completely offset it because of the difference in spool sizes.

All correct, but when you get on the water. let all your line out and drag it behind your boat for a few minutes. Then reel it back in and your line will not have twists in it. I do this occasionally and it keeps my line from twisting. I think the real key here is to not overfill the spool, 1/8" from the lip is a good rule of thumb.

Let me add .........with no terminal tackle, just the line paying out in the water, It will untwist itself.  If your bank fishing you can do this by going onto a point or dock and let the line in the current or wind direction.

This is absolutely the best way to remove or prevent line twist.

What they all said. It seems no matter what you do you'll get twists so I go out on the golfcourse and let all the line out. It's definetely worth the time.

Of course I ought a new rod/reel and and had it spooled at the store and I haven't had any problems with it. I might try rigging something up with a drill or something.

the way i do it is, after the slip knot around the spool. i put a knot 1/4 in from the slip knot tighten up the knots, wrap the line around the line clip on the spool. spool up 1/8in of the rim. the next part may not seem normal but what i do is i'll open the bail, walk the line completely out, then holding the line with a damp rag i reel the line back. guarantee no twists. because i do fish everyday after work. i walk my line out and reel it back every day. (i do this at work, because i can   the damp rag not only save your skin but cleans the line as well.
