Will ultralite lures work on non ultralite rigs?

Featured Replies

Might be stupid but my friend fishes with a ultralite rig and lures(tadfry, yo zuri, spoons etc.) and he always catches fish but I have a rig that has probably 8-10 lbs test on it(Mitchell open face).....will the tadfry I bought today work on my rod and reel as well?  Thanx everybody.

I'm not exactly sure as to what a tadfry is, but 8-10 lb test should be fine for ultra light depending on the size of the lure...

Some folks consider anything below 1/4 oz to be ultra light... I use lures in the 1/6th and lower range as ultra light lures...

Best of luck to you !!

My experience is that they will "work" but not as effectively as if you were to use UL gear.

You're asking an awful lot in trying to cast a Tadfry on 8-10lb line.  6 would be more like it.  If I'm fishing for bluegill or crappie I toss it on 4.  Great little lure, BTW.

Someone wanna post a pic of this tadfry ?? I'm curious... :-?

Here ya go.  At 1/16 oz, even 6lb line is rough but it can be done.  Just don't try to get much distance ;D  It's got the smallest treble hook I've ever seen.  Great bluegill/crappie lure.

OMG !! I have those !! I just couldn't remember what they look like :-[....

Never had much luck with them here where I live but keep them handy anyway... I've always had better luck with the snap beans by yozuri ...

Went out yesterday morning with the tadfry frog and caught 10 which is 10 more than Friday morning, but you guys are right it wasn't going as far as I wanted so I'm gonna rig up an old spinning reel (abu garcia) with 6 lb test and see if I get better results.  Thanx for the help guys.

You can't make a rod/reel combo into a workable ultralight, but you can make the ultra lite bait castable.

A clear "casting bubble" looks like a bobber, but it's clear and meant to be filled with a little water to give enough weight to cast ultra lite stuff.

Or a little split shot up the line.

Or a finish nail in the nose of a soft plastic.

or a drop shot.

get the picture?  You need to find a satisfactory way to add weight while maintiaing the essential characteristics of the lure.

good luck and have fun

Thanx for the advice, gonna try out my older spinning reel that I just spooled 6 lb test on and see how that works for me this evening.
