flys for bass

Featured Replies

how many use flies and ultra light tackle for bass?

i do on occasion.

I just started fly fishing this past summer. Man what a blast. I landed about a 1 1/2 to 2 pounder on a top water popper in the shallows, what a fight. While I don't think I could go to a moving stream and have much luck, I bought a 6wt floating type and had a blast with the bream and bass.

I fly fish for them.  Last year I did a lot, this year not as much.  Usually I am lake fishing and use an 8 wt with some clouser-ish flies and some epoxy flies that I tie myself.  Nothing like a 19" smallie on a 9 ft whippy stick...

If you have any streams with smallies, you can catch them.  Any weighted fly that looks even remotely like a crawdad will work in current.  Get some bead head woolybuggers in a brown color with some copper in the tail and strip them through a good eddie or current break.  You'll catch some fish...

that goes to saying with out a doubt ultra light does produce also teaches you to play the fish as well since its a differnt ball game then most bass'in

I have a 5wt I use for smaller bass fishing occasionally.  I was having pretty good luck with Wooly Buggers and Deceivers.  I just purchased an 8wt not too long ago and have yet to do smaller striper fishing with it.  Can't wait though.  There is nothing like a bass on a fly.

Cheers!

I do a lot of fly fishing, mostly for trout and bream but I do fly fish a couple ponds for bass. I use a 9' 6wt orvis rod and orvis battenkill reel, my top producing patterns are purple/blue dahlburg divers, olive/black woolly buggers, and clouser minnows in all colors.

I also tie my own flies, mostly woolly buggers, clousers (I have my own variation of the clouser that I tie with deer hair and marabou, the action is awesome) and a few bream and trout patterns.

I use an 8wt usually with surface poppers/hair frogs etc.  It's a fun way to fish when conditions are right.
