Powerpro VS Spiderwire Stealth

Featured Replies

I know this has been covered before and its just like the Senko/Knockoff debate.

Which one(in everyones opinion) is better between the 2. What are your experiences? In everyones personal experience, what are the strong(good) and weak(bad) points of each line?

I know there are other lines that everyone likes, but I am only concerned with the comparison of these 2 lines?

No matter what brand braided line, what are somethings that should be done differently when using braids that are normally done with Mono? Such as how the drag should be set,and how the line may behave different or cause lures to behave differently? What are somethings that need to be aware of when using braided line? I already know to carry scissors to cut the line and watch your fingers cause it can cut to the bone.

Thanks

I use Power Pro Braid but unfortunately I have never used Spiderwire Stealth Braid.

Stealth is one of the newer braids (I believe it replaces 'Whiplash') and one that I'm interested in myself.

Both braids are gel-spun polyethylene, but Power Pro is made of "Spectra" fibers, whereas Spiderwire Stealth is "Micro Dyneema".

PowerPro is a round line, unlike ripcord and others that are flat ovals. PowerPro has a slippery texture like Teflon and casts great!

Spiderwire Stealth is also a round line, but is actually impregnated with Teflon, so it won't wear off like a Teflon coating.

The diameter of 30-lb PowerPro and 30-lb Spiderwire Stealth are both equivalent to 8-lb monofilament line.

Spiderwire Stealth is allegedly the tightest braid on the market, which is conducive to abrasion-resistance

and casting distance.                         Well, it's 2:30 AM and about time to hit the hay.

I've used both and I prefer the spiderwire stealth. Power pro seems to fade and get broken down plus stealth is slightly cheaper.

I have now used PP, Spiderwire Stealth, and Stren Superbraid. I really don't find much difference in any of them except for something with the Stren that makes it capture less water. When reeling in, it doesn't have as much water spray. At any rate, I have alway's used the same knots, and have always wetted the knot, whether I need to or not, and have never had issue with PP or Stealth. I hear of some who claim the Stealth doesn't have good knot strength, but I have not had this issue.

In the end, it mostly boils down to personal preference. For me, I am willing to buy a spool of something and try it so I can say I like it or don't. PP is popular for a reason, and Spiderwire is still around for a reason, neither are "gimmicks", they both work.

I used PP until for 5 years, until this year. I needed 50lb and couldnt find any PP within an hour of me that size. SO i tryed the Stealth and have no complaints. It keeps its color, less wind knots, likes a not better...Better line IMHO.

They must have improved stealth since I used it last. I bought 2 spools of it a year ago. I spooled up a couple rods with it, went fishing... came home 45 minutes after I got there, and cut the stealth off my reels. My experience with it was that it wouldn't cast for crap, lost its color, and the braid would loosen up after a few casts.

I haved used both and both are excellent and equal in many aspects. However, I give the edge to PPro because to me it seems "rounder"

Braid vs Mono

Braid stretches very little, unlike mono. As a result, informaiton will be transmited to you more clearly and distinctly. However, that near zero stretch will also mean you need to make adjustmenst when fishing with treble hook lures. That same hookset you'd make with mono could pull the bait out of their mouths before they close it. Take it from someone (me) who learned the hard way.  A looser drag setting is also useful.  The thinner line will probably make the cranks dive just a wee bit deeper. Keep your trebles ultra sharp and you won't even have to set the hook.  The fish will impale themselves on the hooks and all you need to do is add a little tension to the line. These are the adjustments that I make when using braid.

Braid is opaque and very visible. From my experiments and limited experience with bass and other fish, even in waters with lots of human activity, many times they could care less about the braid (water with good clarity). If they wanted my lure, they'd take it. This will not be the case 100% of the time though.  If they are skittish and spookey, they just might not bite with the braided line or any other line.  ;D
