Just purchased a 7.1 geared reel but am uncertain what techniques it is best suited for. Was thinking of putting it on my frog rod or rattrap rod, not really sure.

Spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and toads.

it would be good on your toad rod.  i use mine on my pitchin' rod

they work great for any bait you want to retrieve fast such as toads, or in my case pitchin', you can get your bait out of "dead" water and into "fishy" water faster than w/ a slower retrieve reel

but really, spinerbaits, buzzbaits(especially), crankbaits, plastics if you work em real slow.

i use them for everything but deepdiving cranks, just reel slow.... I feel like i cover 2x more what jig/t-rig fishing just being able to get the lure back faster after it leaves the strike zone.

Exactly, I like using mine for a jig or t-rig.  I dont think you need 7:1 for a buzzbait but it helps a ton when you have to reel up slack quick and set the hook.  And as far as moving these baits that is done with the rod anyway.

Ditto.  I use my fast geared reel for my jig/trig as well.  This allows me drop a jig infront of them and then real it up quickly and drop into the next hole.  In my opinion a 7:1 ratio is a little to fast for a crankbait.  Just my opinion though.  

you can use it for alot of things but i just wouldnt use it for a crankbait.
