I got a few responses about the 1003 id like more input... yeehawwwwwwwwwww  Of some one who has used both

I've heard good things about the 1003. They aren't made anymore but they appear to available through certain sources.

Edit --- I'll defer to the next poster since he owns a Black Max.

Just got my black max in today so far so good, trying it out tomorrow.

You can still find NIB 1003LP's on ebay.  Not sure if you'll find anyone that can give a direct comparison since that Black max reel is so new.

The 2 1003 reels I had were very solid.  Had them for a year or so before upgrading.  

cart thats what i like to hear im just gonna use um for beater reels ..4 wheeler /woods hiking/ w-e and when ever i dont wanna take my revos and other expensive stuff
