anti-reverse

Featured Replies

So the anti-reverse is going out on favorite reel, quantum iron acs, its about ten years old.  It just started doing it today and it doesnt go in reverse everytime but it does make it a little harder to set the hook.  Is it an easy fix or should I just buy a new reel.  What is a good round baitcaster for $100-150?

Sounds like it is time to have the reel serviced.

The easy fix would be to buy a new reel....

Ok got any recommendations?  I like the round reels...  Shimano Cardiff are in my price range, is that a good choice?

Garcia's 4000 or 5000 series in C4 or C5

Used Record reels RCN40 on Ebay.  A little heavy but silky smooth.

The Cardiff is supposed to be a great reel.

Used Calcutta's can be found in very good condition on Ebay for $110 - $130.

The easy fix is not having the reel fixed:

-Shipping back and forth

-Repair fees

-Parts

Those will cost you almost what the reel is worth.

The symptoms he has posted are that of older Quantum AR bearing packs that are dirty with old grease and oils...

In all honesty the easy fix would be if he new how, would be to deep clean and properly re-lube the AR bearing pack.. If it hasn't been injured (cracked or broken) it should cure the problem.

Well how do I do it?  I had 2 yrs of basic engineering classes in college, it can't be that hard.  How many times a year should I lube up my reels?  I usually only do it once or twice a season, since I only get to fish a 3-4 times a month.  Is that not enough?  Should I do it everytime I fish?

I fish once or twice a month, I clean and grease every 3-4 outings depending upon how much punishment the reel takes, oil the spool supporting bearings every 1-2 trips.

There used to be a time when I fished on a daily basis, I cleaned and greased the reel every week, no wonder why that reel has lasted for a couple of decades.
