I should have been more specific.....

Not by brand but by gear ratio, ball bearings and spool capacity, which reels should be used for which applications (jigs, worms, cranks, spinerbaits.)??

Also, I am a spinning reel guy, so thanks for the info. on baitcasters, but I am specifically talking spincast reels.

Just one man's assorted thoughts.

Bass don't make long runs, so capacity is not an issue. I never saw a reel that didn't have adequate capacity.

Ball bearings are nice, but more of them don't necessarily mean a better reel.

Gear ratios are a matter of personal preference. You could go higher for jigs and soft plastics, for example, so you could take up slack line faster and tighten the line faster when the fish swims toward you.

You could also go lower for lures offering a lot of resistance, such as deep-diving crankbaits. But you could go higher and slow down when necessary.

I tend not to be technique-specific and use something around 5:1 for all my needs. Keep in mind that many spinning reels will take up more line than baitcasters with the same ratio, so beware of comparisons between the two.

Use reels with decent sized spools because line performance is better with a bigger spool, given a choice between two sizes.

I know this is vague but there are no "right" answers for everyone.

marty is right.spinning limits your choices.look at the line recovery rate when using spinning reels as they take in more line than a baitcaster of the same ratio.

this is a great spinning reel.it's one of the best buys out there.the problem is all of them retreive 30 inches or more per handle turn.this is not good for crankbaits or slow moving lures.this is why you limit yourself when you use only spinning.you can buy baitcasters with recovery rates from 21 to 31 inches.the 21 would be a great deep diving crankbait reel.

I use Pflueger Preidents; 60 bucks and well woth it. I also have a Trion, i use on a Cabelas Gold Lable rod i keep behind the seat in my pickup thatl set you back 40 bucks and is also a great product
