help with set up new StCroix

Featured Replies

Had a nice Christmas surprise from the wife, new StCroix AVS70MLF spin rod.  7', med lite, fast action, 4-10lb, 1/8-3/8oz.

Would like some input on reels, line, application if anyone has used this model in the past.

Thanks for your time - Corky

I have the AS66MLF which I like, but only use for white bass, crappie and stocker trout. Mine is matched up with a Shimano Stella 1000FB and #4 Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft. I think the best applications are for light "moving" lures or bait. The tip is too soft for most soft plastics and jigs, but I fish grubs on it often.

If you are looking for more of an "all-around" rod, you should consider swapping it for a MF or MXF.

I know it's not bass, but that rod would make a superb Lindy rig rod for walleye.

So.......translate that technique into bass fishing, and you have a nice split-shot rod.  Also, it should do well for a dropshot, and a slip-bobber rod.

If you scour the internet, you can find the discontinued 2000 size Shimano spinning reels.  One of those would balance that baby out nicely.

Actually, it would be for Bass.  Hate to run through the hassle of exchanging it and, I do need a shakey head set up but; if it's too lite might have to think of something different I guess.  I do have another St Croix MH I've been used on T rigs I really like but nothing in the arsenal ML until now.

Appreciate the input fellas.

I used to use a AS69MLXF for shakey head fishing.  Now granted that rod is a bit stiffer than the 70MLF, because it is an XF, but that rod did very well for shakey heads and grub work.

Next time you're at the store, give the MLXF and the MF or MXF a good shakin', and then compare them to your rod.

Id like to see the pflueger supreme in the smallest size 6.5 oz on that rod

Quantum Catalyst Pt20 and 10 lb seagaur flouro
