Revo SX/SX-L Users-Questions About The Reel

Featured Replies

I got the Revo SX-L today & not sure about the magnetic brake.

I see that there is a minimum & maximum setting & whatever else between those 2 settings.

With your use of the SX/SX-L magnetic brake, where do you set your brake at?  I will (hopefully if weather permitting) trying the reel out tomorrow.  I will probably start at max mag brake setting & click down to where it feels good for me.

Also, you guys notice that when you turn the mag brake dial that halfway through the turn it tightens up before you get to the maximum setting?  Does the mag brake dial need a breaking in???

I have 3 Abu Revos, the S, Sc, and Sx.  Each time I get a new reel regardless of what it is I set the brake and the middle setting.  On the S that is 3 brakes in, and 3 out.  On the Sc and Sx I set it at right at the middle between the minimum and maximum.  From there I adjust accordingly and have become comfortable enough with them that I normally keep it at "3" unless there are windy condition(in which I normally adjust the cast control knob) or with light baits I often have to adjust the brake a little higher.  I hope that help and my experience with the Revo magnetic brake is little adjustments make a big difference.  ;)

First of all, set your spool tension knob so that you lure falls slowly when you wiggle/lightly bounce the rod tip - just like the instuction book says.

Then I like to set the brake to the 1/2 mark and adjust from there.  I usually end up eaving it there, or a few clicks either way.

The magnetic brake is not super-powerful.  Casting a Revo well will take practice.  Make sure you learn to use your thumb to slow the brake (see Reelmech's page on casting a bait caster).  The Revos are a little tempermental with respect to overruns so decent thumb discipline will be needed.

Like Reel mech says - practice x 3.

With all of my Revos, I set the brakes at 1/2 to start and adjust as neccessary. I rarely have to use more braking. Most important, as others have stated, learn to use your thumb!!!

Agree however you need to have the mag brake to the minimum wheh you will first set your spool tension knob
