yozuri ultra soft question(RoadW)

Featured Replies

I use 12lb hybrid now. I want to try the 15lb in ultra soft. I like the strength, but my dream line would be something with  alittle less memory. I will use a baitcaster only. I know RW uses this line, just want to know how the 15lb would do on a baitcaster. Ive heard everyone speak of the 12lb, but  not  the 15lb in H.U.S. What would be the cons and pros of this move? Will I find the line that Im looking for?

RW will likely be on soon to help you out. YZ Ultra Soft #12 has a very high breaking strength, about 19 or 20 lbs I think. I have been snagged in some tough cover with the #12 and have cut the line,  also have straightened out some beefy hooks, it's HARD to break it off. I can't imagine a LM this line won't handle. JMHO

Well, here's the long version:

I have been fishing Ultra Soft #12 on all my baitcasters for about two years. After a few casts, the line has virtually NO MEMORY. Strength is a non-issue unless you think it is a little too strong. (Like Alpster, I have had to cut the line when fishing in a kayak).

The only issue I have had is kinks that occur sometimes when you get a nasty backlash. The line is a bonded (not coated) fluorocarbon/ nylon copolymer. When the line is severely creased, I think the fluoro cracks which creates a visible kink or weak spot. You need to be aware of that and replace the line at that point. (I'm an "add-on" guy. I only fish about 80-100 yards of line on top of backing, I rarely respool totally).

So, what I have found is that on rigs I rarely backlash, the line lasts indefinately. On others, I add-on occasionally.

Now, something new. I found a super sale on original formula Hybrid, 1 lb (3,000 yards) of #15. This line has memory and retains a lot of it initially from being stored on a reel. However, this stiffness resolves itself when using heavy lures. Also, thicker line does not backlash easily and does NOT kink! I am experimenting with this set-up on three rigs and so far it's working.

To answer your question:

I think #12 Ultra Soft is all you need, but #15 will probably eliminate the kinking issue and will still have very little memory. However, if you go to #15, it will be VERY difficult to break, so take that into consideration.

And one final note:

I just spooled up #6 Ultra Soft in green which looks like braid and is why I have always used clear. As it turns out, in the gin clear water of my swimming pool, this line is TOTALLY invisible! I'm amazed, green with this diameter (.010") is a PERFECT match to water. I think this might carry over in the thicker lines.
