Abu Garcia Max series reels

Featured Replies

Anyone have any experience with these reels? Trying to decide whether to get the silver max, seems like a pretty nice reel for the price.

They sound as if they should be decent.  I think Tin has one, ask him if he doesn't find this thread.  You might also consider the Daiwa Exceler.  A very well appointed reel for $70!

I got one of the SilverMax combos(reel and 6'6" MH) for Christmas. The combo is nice and the reel is very smooth for it's price range. They respect the old Abu Max moniker. Now does it compare to my Revos, NO.  If you are looking for an Abu specifically and don't want to spend $100, then I would recommend it. I would also look at the ProMax version, but then $20 more will get you the Revo S.

The thing that bugs me about them is the thumb lever. It's chromed plastic and it doesn't look very durable.

For me it's the lack of aluminum frame.  The reels I've had in the past with graphite/poly frames have never lasted long for me, no matter the brand.  This is why I would consider the Exceler instead.  A aluminum framed reel, magforce Z, swept handle, under 9 oz with 8 bearings and Daiwa quality for only $70??  I can't figure out why it is so cheap?  I need to look at one I guess.

thanks, everyone. I think I will go with the Exceler, it looks like a much better reel, and for only $10 more than the silver max.

IMO the Pro Max is the best reel on the market for under $100, by far the best. Lighter than a Revo S and just as smooth. :)

Funny thing, I asked for opinions on the Exceler a week or so ago. Everyone said to wait until it proved itself, being that it is a new model and all. I checked it out on my BCR803 and really liked it. It is smooth and as noted above, it has a aluminum frame. I think you will be happy with the Exceler, mddj.

I honestly didn't know about it a week ago.  Who has to wait for a Daiwa to prove itself??  Thats crazy talk if you ask me. Daiwa builds good stuff.

Is the frame graphite or metal/aluminum?

the max is junkola- made out of plastic throughout, will get the job done if you don't fish that often- the Exceler is a far superior peice.  Two years ago the exceler would have been a 150 dollar reel.
