Small portable telescoping rod

Featured Replies

Last October I started walking to and from my house to the commuter train station 2 miles away to burn some extra calories.  The walk takes me through some woods and around a small man made lake.  I know the lake holds some nice sized LMB but I haven't really had a chance to fish it yet.  I started thinking last week as I'm walking on the trail around it that it sure would be nice to throw in a line for 10-15 minutes before the wife starts wondering where I am... lol.

I started thinking about portable setups that would be small enough to fit in my backpack.  Not looking for anything fancy, just small and at least semi reliable.  I'm tempted to buy this Eagle Claw setup that I found on Amazon...

Unfortunately even that looks like it might get beat up in my pack.  Ideally I'd like something that comes with it's own hard case but still small enough for my backpack.  Any suggestions?  I didn't look at Bass Pro yet, but thought I'd see if anyone has ideas.

Whatever dude.

If you don't have something positive to say then ignore the thread.  Like I said, I just want to get a few casts in on a local lake on my way home from work.  With 3 small children I don't get very much time to fish at all.

You could always make your own case out of pvc pipe if they don't sell any small ones.  I looked around and couldn't find any. Although, that could end up taking up quite a bit of space in a backpack.  Also, I don't know how much protection you would get from it, but it seems like that setup would be small enough to be covered by a large sock.  I don't though.  I'm sure you can find something.

TELESCOPING RODS ARE A WASTE OF MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look for a travel rod kit in its own case , the rods are usually in 3 or 4 pieces plus reel.

Thanks.  I was just looking at a couple travel kits like that and they come in their own case.  That's what I'm leaning toward now.

I really believe you will get better service with the travel kits .

How much have you used a rod like this ?

I've only looked at them. I have no need for a telescoping rod. Not a fan? ;D

Eagle Claw makes a 4 piece travel rod that you can get through Cabelas.  I can't say what the quality is like, but I have an Eagle Claw 3 wt fly rod that is d**n impressive for the money.

I've thought many times about picking up that travel rod to throw in my suitcase on business trips.  I'd have to just get a hard case to put it in.  I was in new Orleans last week and was kicking myself for not having a rod with me!!

I bought a 4 piece travel rod from Cabelas just to keep in the vehicle. It came with a nice carrying case and was pretty cheap. If I remember correctly it was around $35. The only issue is that the case is for the rod only so you end up spending a few minutes getting the reel mounted on the rod and then assembling the pieces. Cabelas does make a "telescoping" rod if you are just looking for something you can whip out of a bag and get fishing immediately. Neither of these is by any stretch a new Loomis when it comes to feel. But they certainly have some value if they allow someone to sneak a little fishing in when they otherwise couldn't. Now, if the telescoping rod becomes your favorite rod we may need to have a little talk... ;)

I have a 6.5' med/heavy telescoping rod my daughter bought me for fathers day a few years ago at BPS for $20.

It is nothing fancy but I keep it with me everywhere I go in case I get off work early and I drive by many places to fish around here.

I packed it in my checked luggage when I flew to Las Vegas this fall it survived.  I would simply wrap some soft cloth around it if I wanted to pack it around in a back pack.

I like it but I don't know how it would hold up to a lunker wrapped in weeds ??
