Pflueger Trion = Gold Medalist Pro?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I just picked up a new Pflueger Trion and BPS XPS Extreme rod this weekend.  I have had a Plfueger "Gold Medalist Pro" for a few years now, picked it up from Dick's Sporting Goods.  Now when I set both reels next to each other, they look IDENTICAL, with the expection of the printing.  The Gold Medalist Pro says it has 8 bearings too, where the Trion says 7.

So what I'm wondering is....How long has the Trion been out?  Could the Gold Medalist Pro be the same reel, just made with a different name for Dick's?

Help me oh Pflueger masters!  :)

Thanks!!

Gold Medalist Pro is on the left, Trion/BPS XPS Extreme is on the right.

not a master but do know that they rename reels for different retailers, i.e. quantum inferno in a quantum ac 500 cx.

i have bought reels from gander mountain that were guide series but were actually okuma reels.

i also bought a shakespeare reel at wal-mart called a dimension that looked just like the guide series from gander which looks identical to my sons president from pflueger.  seems to me, and i have heard this more than once, there are only a few reel makers and name change for the reels for the different brands!!!  make sence???

I can not remember exactly when the Pflueger Trion spinning reel came out, but it seems like it has been 4-5 years now (my years all

seem to run together now that I am old  lol).

It is common practice for supplier to have store specific product lines.

You very well could have two identical reels with different names. Judging by the pictures, it looks like you do.

How did they compare in price?

Hummm.....I seem to remember that the Gold Medalist was about $30, and the Trion was $40.  But it was a few years ago, so the natural progression of prices could be the difference....

I was wondering the same thing. I picked up a "gold medalist" at dicks and always assumed it was the trion.

My father-in-law loves those things.  He has a few of them.  I have to admit, though, they are pretty nice reels for that price.  They are pretty smooth.  I was curious to know if they were trions with a different bearing count and tried to look up the schematic for the Trion to compare it to his schematic.  Unfortunately, Pflueger doesn't have their reel schematics in PDF format.

Just posted and saw your thread

Like deja-vu all over again when I saw your picture.

The reel on the left is a Pflueger Trion I bought at Dicks last year.  The reel on the right is a BPS micro-lite I got last week.  They are identical.

Looks like we have three reel bodies that are the same.
