Cleaning cork

Featured Replies

Hi all, I know this topic has been on here before, but I cannot remember how to clean the cork handles on my rods.  Any/all advise is appreciated.  Gracias.-- Rob

I have heard that one of those magic erasers work good on cork, but have not tried it for myself.

Mr Clean Magic Eraser and some warm water will do the job.  I just got finished cleaning a few of mine.  They don't quite look like new, but they are much much cleaner.

Dawn Dish Liquid Detergent, a scrubbie( like for non stick pots) makes em clean in about 10 econds! 8-)

I use denatured alcohol with a light colored shop rag to clean the handles.  Once clean and dry, I seal the cork using U-40 cork seal.  The U-40 seems to darken the cork a bit, but the finish is good and it should last a season or two depending on how much you use the rods.

Careful not to use too much.  It can drip or run if you brush too much on.

I like to use rubbing Alcohol first to get rid of the grease and oil from my hands and then dish soap with warm water and one of the pot scrubbing sponges my wife uses for dishes. Then rinse with clear water and dry. Look like new!  :) Mike

Not that I like the dirty cork, I don't understand cleaning them.

some people just like to keep stuff looking new.

i'm kind of weird about this type of thing.....i am anal about keeping my reels clean looking and not scratched.

but my rods....i like the black on the cork....makes it look like it's caught a bunch of fish.
