Question for Reelmech and Pflueger fans

I read "somewhere" that Pflueger reels (namely the President) have internal corrosion problems (probably ) due to the dissimilar metals in and around the bearings.

I've never heard of this.

Don't all reels use dissimilar metals in and around bearings?

Has anyone (Reelmech?) ever heard of this phenomenon with Pflueger reels?

The Reel Mechanic isn't a Pflueger fan........ 8-)

Micro,

If your referring to a bearing pack set into a metal side plate, and a corrosion problem with the outer edge of the bearing pack. It's possible.. But I would have to say more so if the reel is used in a salty environment, or stored in a damp area and left wet.

But even at that it can be prevented by a grease wipe down in the area that is affected, once cleaned up...

I don't service Pflueger so I can't say for sure..... ;)

Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!

If the bearing pack is stainless steel, and the side plate is aluminum, that describes 99.9% of all LP reels out there.    Seems to me they live happily together in almost all reels.   Galvanic corrosion shouldn't occur unless there was an electrolyte introduced, such as saltwater.

So it's unlikley corrosion exists simply becasue of the use of dissimilar metals, and more likely because of lack of proper care?

You got it!!  ;)  Take care of your reels people, they will last your lifetime if you do.

Hey Micro; I have not used my Trions in salt water, but I keep them clean and lubricated without any problems.

I can't imagine there is a problem with Pfluegers.  When it comes down to it, they're built pretty much the same as every other reel.

IMO nearly 90% of the reel/rod/line/bait problems are created by the person with the rod in hand. Including those god awful professional overruns I get that look like an old fashioned backlash.  I get these or similar when I try to cast into a gale or some other self imposed stupidity.

I haven't fished mine in the salt either and won't ever. To my fellow anglers with Trions, do not use it in the salt. It clearly states in the user manual freshwater only. It's a bummer, but that is what I have an Abu G Round, Curados, and Cardiffs for. My Trion battles chum salmon that can spool a Curado 201D.  ;D True story. A brute chum spooled my full capacity 201D and a 22 minute battle.

I am not knocking shimano.  I am an equal opportunity reel user and don't have absolute loyalty to any brand.
