Best muddy water bait and color

Featured Replies

So we've been in somewhat of a drought until the last week and alot of water has been dumped in here. Fishing a tournament this weekend and I know the water is gonna be muddied up. From my past experiences a StrikeKing black buzz bait and the Strike King and Booyah Jigs in blue and black have worked best for me.  So in your opinion what is the best muddy water bait or the best color to use in muddy water?

Black (or just "dark") and anything that produces a lot of sound/vibration.

Should be looking at big colorado bladed spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and possibly big worms w/ rattle (jigs too).

Other lures will catch fish in conditions like you mention, but the baits above will usually produce.

You guys are both right...I'll add the fish usually stick VERY close to structure.   I usually just grab my  bulkiest blk/blue jig with a paca chunk senior (black), a colorado bladed spinnerbait, and a buzzbait if it is early.   There are different levels of muddy:  really dirty, muddy, chocolate milk.  The first two stages will sometimes warrant a Yammamoto 8" grub or an 8" Mann's paddle tail, but in chocolate milk...I'll stick mainly to the jig or spinner.

I favor a big round crankbait with a square bill in highway yellow with a black back.  followed by a big spinner bait.

A big wide kicking crankbait - baby!    They're noisy, displace a lot of water, etc.etc.....all things good in dirty water.   Something like a firetiger Bagley B3.

My current go-to is a H&T Balsa HT2......REALLY big wide wobble - lots of water displacement.   They should have called it the H&T Attention Whor e.  :P

Yeah, black jigs work too......but they aren't as much fun.   :)

Rattle trap,  colorodo blade spinnerbait

Chatterbait, black or black and red.

Jig, Big bladed spinnerbait, big worms, black bussbait, and for some reason a chrome black or blue back rattletrap. I discovered the trap on Lake Texoma several years ago fishing behind several others and ripped them up river. Have tried it many times in muddy water and it has saved my bacon more than once.

Im glad to hear some of you mention the rattle trap. This is a lure that I was considering for this saturday's tournament but then had some doubt after we've been getting all this rain. But after hearing couple of you guys having luck on em in muddy water looks like I need to stick to the plan, Ill definetly have one tied on.

a BIG colorado bladed spinner bait, either straght, extremely bright chartreuse or black. also a big, square billed wide-wobbling crank chartreuse/black back
