Weak drag on the curado D? anyone else have this problem?

Featured Replies

I'm not sure if it's just my reel or this is something with all the curados...I have a 101D and even with my drag locked down i seem to be able to pull the line out with my hand, it's difficult but possible.  Anyone else see this?

I believe the Curados only have ten pounds of drag so you might be able to pull some with it locked up. Only had my Shimonos a few months but never tested the way you have. Someone here will know if thats normal.

SimonSays,

What you are describing sounds like a spool loaded with braided line and no backing. With the drags locked down (as you put it), you should have plenty of drag for most any freshwater fish you will run across.

Remember this "there are no direct drive reels anymore" , all of the freshwater reels manufactured today are setup to release at a certain amount of drag pressure to help keep the one way bearings from blowing out, and in Shimano' own way that's why they have been using the Stopper Assist.

Just my .02¢ from the bench.

Hiya Reelmech, I use about 5 turns of 6lb mono backing for all my reels.

SimonSays,

Yup that's what I thought. I would cover the backing with a single layer of electricians tape. This allows the braided line to bite into a non slick surface, then I bet the line will no slip at all.

The best way to test for braided line slipping on the spool, is spool up your braided line the way you normally do. Then remove the spool from the reels frame, hold both ends of the spool and pull the line, if you can pull line off it's slipping and has nothing to do with the drags in the reel.

Yo

I have a Curado 100 DSV.  All mono, yes the drag lets out line when you "Lock" it down and pull from it.  The 100 isnt a heavy duty reel and has 8.8 lbs of drag.  So think if your pulling on it straight from the spool, I assume you are giving it more that 10 pounds of drag.

Now it is different if the line isn't pulled directly from the reel.  Go get your rod,  mount you reel,  run the line through it, tie it to something, lock down the drag and pull on your rod like your fighting a fish.  See if the drag lets any line out, be careful not to break your rod.  Now think about that and what kind of fishing your doing.  If you aren't fishing for tuna or bat rays with your 100 D, you should be able to subdue freshwater fish with it....

If you still are not satisfied, Carbontex makes a drag kit for the 100D.  Reel Mech can hook you up..  ;)
